All of that territory was ceded to the US by Mexico in 1848. It had already started being settled by Americans in 1846. Those few people living there were more than happy to be granfathered into the union.

There were Spanish land grants going back to the early 1500's and those land grants in New Mexico were actually within the Louisiana Purchase by agreement with Spain. One of the technicalities that had to be settled in the Louisiana Purchase was what would happen to those people already living there. The United States government promised all legal deeds would be honored. But it was about another 100 years before it became a territory with a court house, and so when they went to the court house to have their deeds registered, or when someone came to kick them off their land they were told their deeds couldn't be legal. After all they were written in Spanish.

Just another one of those little known grand thefts of history. And I'm not saying the Native Americans and especially the Apache weren't treated worse, I'm just saying they weren't the only ones who got ripped off.
