Why are people entitled to basic human rights?

The very term you chose to use implies that rights are inherent to the human condition.

Why would slavery be immoral? Slaveowners argued, perhaps correctly in a world without Reconstruction, that slaves were "better off" in the care of their masters - particularly after the slave trade had been banned and two generations had been born knowing no life other than servitude. The Romans considered slavery the embodiment of charity.

This has never been an argument about action. I would never argue that action isn't necessary to guarantee inalienable liberty. The Mullah tells the woman that she is better as a ward of the men in her family. Her society raises her to obey her family and her Mullah. Before someone can ever take action and step in between the Mullah and the woman and shout, "NO! This is wrong!" - they first have to identify that it is wrong, and then they have to convince the woman WHY it is wrong. An idea is required.

That idea is inalienable liberty.

 

It seems you tend to think in philosophical abstractions, and I tend to think in practical terms. What good is an inalienable right to liberty if you are denied that liberty by others? What meaning does it have for you? It will not fall into your lap because you (rightly) desire it and (rightly) feel entitled to it? Most of the world doesn't have it, and is mainly concerned with where the next meal is coming from.

I've been thinking about this for the past few days and really feel I need to come back and address it. Because if nothing else you could be Sarah Palin using your kids to try and push false conservative dogma.

Here's what I would have told my daughter.

Because not everyone can work, honey. Life is not fair dear, and some people come into this world unable to work or take care of themselves. So we only have two choices. Kill them at birth. Or pay taxes some of which ends up going to them.

But its a democracy and we can vote to change that. What's your vote dear?" Help take care of them or should we just kill them at birth, or whenever someone can't support themselves. But choose dear and stick with it because those are the only two possible choices we have. Help people or let them die in the streets.

Well dear, just like some people for what ever reason can't work. There is also not a job for everyone in this country and never really has been. And that is especially true right now. There's not a job for maybe 20% of the people who are willing to work. In the best of times there's about 5% more people willing to work than there are jobs. So once again, we only have two choices, well three really, but we can either create enough jobs for everyone to have one, or we have to take of these people two.

Also honey, since most our manufacturing jobs and now our white collar jobs have been shipped to foreign countries many of the jobs we do have don't pay a living wage anymore, so once again, we only have two choices here which is either help people, or let men, women, and children to starve to death. Well actually dear, for safety purposes we really should just go ahead and kill those people too dear, because starving people are really dangerous.

Really? That's strange because you sure don't seem to be speechless here. In fact it seems to me like your whole post reads like some conservative speech I might find in my email.

Well that just all depends. See you and your daughter both still have to make the same choice. Do we start killing disabled people at birth and when ever they become disabled, and do we allow people to die of diseases and starvation in the streets? Or do we help them?

Now, I really want to know what you and your daughter decide. Because the only other choice is to help people, and if you agree that's better than killing them or letting them die in the streets you and your daughter really need to stop bitching about YOUR CHOICE, and start working on real solutions.

 

I hope she finds a wonderful man to marry and because a wonderful housewife and mother. She deserves the best life has to offer

Well said. This was and is a marvelous opportunity to broaden a teenager's horizons, it seems to me. To bring home to her the fact that bad things happen to good people, and that at one time or another in our lives, we all need the help of our fellow man or woman, and our community. And that what we need most in our lives, what really fulfills us, is compassion for others.

What we DON'T need is to arbitrarily judge them unworthy.
