Okay, let's start with you. Have you seen God? Heard him/her speak? What events do you claim to have "seen the hand of God" in? Can you think of no other plausible explanation for what you saw?

 

That someone on this thread would even use Pascal's Wager, or say that our feelings and emotions are ethereal and apart from the physical signifies to me the lack of philisophical and scientific understanding most people have these days.
Pascal's Wager doesnt take into account the hundreds of different types of religions. If you choose to live life as if God exists, which one do you choose? If you choose catholic, you're already damned by the jewish and muslim faiths. It's a horrible excuse to believe in your version of God.

How are our emotions and thoughts seperate from our physical body? There's no proof of that. Split Brain patients show how their memories and thought processes are affected by the severing of the 2 brain halves. Does that mean when they snipped the 2 halves apart, our "spirit" split apart as well?

As for the testimonies and witnesses of God, that argument might hold ground if it werent for the fact that not all of these people see the same God. Hundreds will attest to the Catholic God, hundreds will attest to Allah or any Hindu gods. I'm more inclined to believe that God is a big jerk that likes to go around fooling people into thinking their God was correct and planting evidence of Evolution to fool Scientists into thinking Evolution occured than believing whatever version of your God.

Someone here posted about how there are more Earthquakes now then ever before in history. Well, never before in history have we had so many people living in so many places, and never in history have we had so much communications technology that we can record every Earthquake that happens. There are alot of Earthquakes now because now we have the technology to record them.

On youtube, there's a whole community dedicated to this debate, and a user named Aronra put it best. If God wrote (or inspired, whatever) a holy book, then that book would be the perfect book, filled with perfect morals, perfect history, and perfect writing. It would be a book that stands out against all other books that would claim to be inspired by the divine. And not only that, that book would be so amazing, because it was written (or inspired) by God that it would turn anyone to the right God.
Well, Christian bible, the Qur'an, the Torah, the Talmud, and Dianetics are all as believable as you are.

I keep laughing about the hysteria that seems to be running rampant about earthquakes right now. Just goes to show how a couple of similar high profile events can changes mass perceptions, and usually not for the better.

 

You claim that you understand Pascal's reasoning then make the above statement that proves that you don't. (And how could you put a failed SciFi writer's rantings of a sect in here? Do you believe in The Zetas too?)

The GOD of Abraham is The 'Jewish'/Christian/Islamic GOD. As the Islamics call him The GOD of The Books meaning The Torah, The Bible & The Qur'an.
Pascal (Jewish) is saying that a belief in a benevolent GOD & living up to the high moral standards that it entails is better than not believing & having low expectations.
What you believe or don't believe is up to you, as long as you don't force them onto me or others.

People want a GOD that takes care of them but if he tried they would hold Tea Party meetings to protest it.
They also want to abdicate their responsibility & blame him when things go wrong.
Free Will people ... accept it.

When we die we will find out for sure & those in Heaven will weep for those of us who did not make it.

You're saying with Pascal's Wager, its more beneficial to you to be good to others just in case a God exists. But isnt that like not killing someone JUST because you might get caught?
I'm not a good person because I'm afraid a God will burn me in hell for being bad to people, I'm being a good person BECAUSE I think its good. I dont need a God to tell me to be good, and I dont need a faulty wager to motivate me to be good. It's in no way a good argument for believing in God.

As I said ,you'd think God's presense would be so overwhelming there'd be no question about it. Why is it that he appears to primitives living 2000 years ago, but he wont appear to us today where we have so much evidence for a non-created world and universe that everyone would be skeptical? Is he too busy appearing on pieces of toast and revealing himself to his most devoted followers that the rest of us skeptics are left in the dust, born to go straight to hell?

I was a Jehovah's Witness until about 2 years ago. But I was a rational one. Of course, I had instilled in myself a belief that a dude named Jehovah existed. But I knew I couldnt possibly prove that to anyone else. The only way to do that was show how the bible and the prophecies in it and that the Witnesses had made were so perfect that it was impossible for the bible to be wrong.

Of course, when I went on the internet one day, and decided to see some other arguments against the JW's, something the elders told us NOT to do, a NUMBER of times, I found so many faults in their doctrine it was ridiculous.

My point is, I was a loyal believer of God, I truly wanted to serve him, and yet, he never appeared to me. I had a logical thought process, and it was that that got me out of the religion.

I'm under the impression that the Jehovah's Witnesses (that is, the Watchtower Society) predicted the end of the world repeatedly, giving very specific dates. One would think that as those dates came and went, rational people like you would have begun to develop a healthy dose of skepticism.

i just knew that people would suddenly start saying that earthquakes are happening more lately or something along those lines. Humans really are self centered beings. We believe that all that happens during our pathetically short lifetime is some how overwhelming significant to the cosmos. I mean for pete's sake our species has been around for a few hundred thousand years and we've only been recording natural disasters for a few hundred years. The earth is 4.5 billion years old. billion. We have difficulty remember the exact details of events that happened 100 years ago much less for 500 years, 1000 years. Humans truly think too much of their individual experiences.

Ties into the whole god issue. Leave it to a human being to believe that the all powerful being who created the entire cosmos also has avid interest in the daily trials of mankind, enough so to send his only begotten son to die for their sins.

Actually, when I was there, we were only told of one date, actually the most well known one that they couldnt really shake off, the 1975 prediction, and they told us that it was us that were being too overzealous about the date, even though there's a decent amount of evidence that the governing body did back this up.

It wasnt until I started doing some research, again, they tell us not to do that, now I seee why, that they had indeed made a number of predictions that they never told us. It's pretty amazing how this sect loves to keep its history secret or try to sugarcoat it. I wish I could have left sooner, I might have been able to make something of myself. I'm glad I got out in time to decide that I really wanted to go to college and university.

Jehova's Witnesses base their end of the world theories on the wrong assumption that when Christ (supposedly) spoke of the "end of time" he meant "the end of an era", meaning "at the end of the time of the sign of Pisces"... Which is round about now. Approximatively every 2100 years, a new sign of the Zodiac aligns right above the Equator. Right now, Aquarius is rising and almost at its equinox...

After the sign of Aries come Pisces (Jesus and co) and when asked what people should do when the end of the era of Pisces was nigh, Jesus answered to "follow the Man with the waterpitcher and enter his house". As for GOD not revealing himself to you, I think HE did. You learnt about teachings of a false prophet did you not & thus extracted yourself from it.
As for working for some one & never having the boss reveal themselves, a lot of worker bees do that everyday 9-5 never meeting The CEO, etc.

I do not believe that we are born to go straight to Hell nor do I think we need to be spoon fed by GOD. Yes it would be nice to have an irrefutable sign from HIM but that guy/gal who noticed I was grieving to-day taking the time to enquire & say take care is a sign that we are touched by The Divine's intervention.

Now as for predictions, the JWs are right up there with Nostradamus & Others. On Dec 22, 2012 a lot of folks will wake up with excuses why the Mayan Calendar was wrong. :lol:
