In the really old days when people couldnt write, they used an X as their signature...Is that why Jesus did an X for Christ...Therefore when we write Xmas, we really mean CHRISTmas...you see..his last name is also the same name as the holiday...What are the odds?

That doesn't follow. You can have a written language and still have a very low literacy rate. There was very little available for ordinary people to read, other than religious texts available only to rabbis. Learning to read and write would have been a very low priority, and beyond the means of most people.

Illiteracy does not synonymous with idiocy. I'm sure there were roughly the same percentage of idiots as there are today. But the fact remains, most people living in Palestine in Jesus' day were probably illiterate. Jesus may or may not have been an exception.
