  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

    Best regards,

    StanleyOG.

There's plenty of business jobs, though. You've just gotta put on a suit and tie and, you know, leave the campus. I know it's all scary out there in the real world, but look at the bright side: you'll actually make a little money!

That's a good point, Ohms! What business majors learn in a BS degree (A-ha! I wonder why they call it a 'BS' degree) is enough to show you how to boil water (if you have two assistants to show you where the faucet is and to turn on the stove for you).

However, with a philosophy degree (or an English degree or a History degree or a Psychology degree, etc), if you are a good student and apply yourself, you actually could be good at business. At least you will know a lot more than the jokers who think a 2.26 GPA and a Marketing degree will get them anywhere (unless Dad is on the Board of a Fortune 500 company)

I have a master's degree in philosophy. I have a job. The two do not necessarily correlate. My favorite joke is "What's the difference between a philosophy degree and a large pizza? A large pizza can feed a family of four."

If you want to teach, then pursue whatever turns your crank. But getting a teaching position at a university is not an easy pursuit. Expect to get at least a Ph.D. and be prepared to do a lot of writing/publishing to get tenure.

Having said that, I would love to get back into teaching. I had fun. There is nothing like teaching 18-22 year olds.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I've got a clearer picture of this.

I dont think I'll shoot for teaching at the university level, but if the degree helps me get a job in business, I'll take it. I guess I should just go for the degree and then wait to see where life takes me from there.

That used to be funny until employers started to out source engineering jobs to India and China. Now the liberal arts major says to the engineering major, "He wants fries with his order. Start cooking some more fries."

It is a bad idea to major in something that you can only teach. You will be competing with every other student the philosophy teacher has for his job, and he won't retire for another twenty years.

If you want to teach something, teach something that people can actually use on a job, or teach mathematics or one of the hard sciences, like chemistry or physics. You can always teach one of those subjects in high school.

If you are really interested in philosophy, study it on your own, but to not expect someone to pay you for what you have learned, and do not pay to learn it. All you need is a library card.

If you are thinking about it this way I would suggest to choose something else. Philosophy study makes sense only if you are really into it and you might become good at it... it is not something really desired in the business world.
You migh write a self-help book or something like "Nietzsche fo Dummies" or even something serious and make a good buck, too, but that market is already too saturated... and the last option is only if you are really good. ;) Only two out of ca.10 of my friends with masters degrees and some with PhD in philosophy work as teachers or young researchers/assistants who publish regularly in important journals published by Sage, Routledge, etc., others dabble in journalism, one is working in a book store and the majority of them work for some NGO on unreliable contracts with very low wage. They are happy in what they do none the less, but from what I read you don't sound like you would be happy in such scenario.

Study what you really like and if a well-paid job prospect is of utmost importance to you - stay away from philosophy. Only a few philosophical "stars" make really good income, the rest must settle for modesty.

I tend to resist the idea that you have to be completely fixated on getting a job when you're in college, especially at the undergraduate level. There is such a thing as education for its own sake, for enlightenment. And lots of undergraduate liberal arts majors end up in medical schools, law schools, public administration, business administration, political science, etc. The OP didn't specify whether he was talking about an undergraduate degree or an advanced degree.
