Poll: Arizona immigration law viewed favorably

By a fairly wide margin, most Americans support the key provisions of Arizona’s new law which targets illegal immigrants.

A new poll released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center found that 62 percent of those questioned think police should be able to question those they believe are in this country illegally. And 67 percent say police should be able to detain anyone unable to verify their legal status.

The survey, conducted last week, also found that 73 percent said people should be required to produce papers verifying they are in this country legally.

That is quite true...but things changed starting with Richard Nixon's election in 1968. The Republican Party adopted a race-baiting strategy of attracting southern white Democrats (the so-called "dixiecrats") by appealing to their loathing of the Civil Rights Act of 1963. They became Republicans, and the Republican Party has dominated the deep south ever since. Ronald Reagan, in an obvious appeal to white racists, opened his campaign in 1980 in Neshoba County, Mississippi, notorious as the site of the killing of three civil rights activists by Klan members in 1964.

In 1968, George Wallace got 10 million votes, mostly from Dixiecrats in the Deep South.
The Republicans didn't need a race baiting strategy.
All the Republicans needed to do was watch Humphrey lose Southern Democrats to Wallace, which ultimately gave Nixon a slim margin in the 1968 election.

Reagan's campaign began long before his speech in favor of state's rights that he gave in August 1980 in Philadelphia Mississippi.

I remember seeing the Reagan for President headquarters sign in downtown Des Moines in late 1979.
Presidential campaigns start in Iowa and New Hampshire, not three months before the election in Mississippi.

As per the ACW, if Northern Democrats had supported Breckenridge, Lincoln would have lost. As it was, they split with Stephen Douglas. This is a direct result of the Southern Democrats walking out of their 1852 convention when the Democratic party introduced an abolition motion to their platform.

Jimmy Carter won the south because you thought he was "one of you." "You" were wrong - or, more likely, Jimmy was right. McGovern couldn't have won the south. Another Democrat didn't win the south again until Clinton - another "one of you." There used to be a truism in Democratic politics that a presidential candidate needed a stupid accent to win.
