I used to run into similiar problems at my job, that's why I went out on my own. They told me the office staff didn't have enough time to be helping me with office oriented tasks. Their time was very valuable and he would prefer that I do trivial things like look up redundant part numbers in a book for the paperwork. I made a lot more money than them so it didn't make sense at all to me. (might as well pay someone 10-12 bucks an hour to look up numbers than pay them 30-40) I'd go in the office sometimes (I avoided it as much as possible) and those lazy fucks would be playing solitaire and looking up recipes. My boss wanted me to do office bs and NEVER do any sort of work, just supervise. I'm a hell of a lot more valuable doing what i'm good at, instead of office crap.

The fact that I had to sit in my pickup sometimes for 15 hours at a time looking up fucking part numbers while they lollygagged around made me pretty mad. I had my fair share of angry rants and verbal blowups while I was there. When I first started everyone thought i was "such a nice guy, unlike your dad" (who also worked there) but it only took one or two rants for them to hate me. Fortunately for me, my value outweighed my bad attitude and anger towards laziness (for two years anyway, then the ratios changed...lol). I would have been fired at most places for the things I said and did.

 

The suckup thing is very true. You have two ways to do well at a job, be extremely compentent and buried in work all the time or suck up and fuck off all the time avoiding work. As said earlier, the only thing a good worker gets is more work.

There was one dbag I used to work with that was awesome at sucking up, he got by with like 30 hours of attendance (i wouldn't call it work...lol) a week and made a lot of money. The boss thought he was great. He cost me thousands of dollars in bonuses and even after he caused a massive cost overrun on a job I still couldn't get him fired. I compiled evidence for 2 months bc I knew what was about to happen and after losing the company 240 thousand dollars on a big job and costing me a 5k completion bonus all I could get was him demoted to an even easier job that still paid the same. I am full of fail.

 

This makes a lot more sense to me than incubus's first statement. You gave solid data showing a lackadaisical attitude of the entire office staff. I worked in a big office and did my job in one hour, but had to sit around while everyone else muddled through. I luckily got a job elsewhere in a month that took all that I knew and kept me on my toes. So I know that there are deadhead offices.

 

It's a hard job, but someone has to do it! Damn, you must work for the Government!

Been there, problem is the companies that I have seen this occuring with regard to bosses, are too cheap to fire them, and rehire and train someone else more humane, or less of a dillettante.
Some co-workers have been twats too, but they have been(and can be) easier to avoid.

Some wannabee bosses with regard to your OP, Inc? Easier said than done, but they must be told off, is it seniority? Still. I would not stand for this all too long, I have been there too, and they heard from me!
The CEO should not be pleased, I wouldn't be, as there is so much waste of your time, provided you are doing all you can to prioritize, of course.

Funny thing, I have worked for the Government, and there were a few nut jobs there, and it was wonderful when my boss died. No one was interested in putting in a penny when his secretary asked for money for flowers. But there were some nice competent people there and also fun people. The toughest thing is working for yourself: if you don't cut it you can't blame anyone.

If your boss is the only one you can't get along with, and if everyone else dislikes her too, that sounds like her fault. If you dislike everyone you work with, and if they dislike you, that sounds like your fault, and it sounds like you will reproduce your problems in a new job.

Life is not fair, but to a considerable extent it is understandable and predictable. If you understand how and why things happen, you are less likely to make avoidable mistakes.

An attitude of entitlement might work in politics if millions of others feel the same way. In your personal life it is likely to get you into trouble.
