Legalization

Marijuana should be legal for the simple fact that it is a plant, is native to America, and grows in all 50 states. Unfortunatley it will most likely never be legalized due to the same reasons. It is too easy to grow and too hard to control/tax it. I think instead of legalization we should all focus on toleration/decriminalization. I may be wrong but i do believe there is no country in the world where marijuana is "legal." I believe even in Amsterdam it is not legal, only tolerated and decriminalized. Pretty sure the dutch don't mind you smoking it in privacy (privacy includes coffeeshops) but they dont want everyone walking around smoking it or standing on the street selling it. If I'm wrong about any of this please correct me. I've yet to make it to Amsterdam but I have visited Vancouver and it's closely related.

 

In general, the older generation seems to be against legalization and the younger generation for it. That's because the older generation was raised during the time when information was less accessible, so they're more inclined to believe what they've learned all their life from the lim9ited informationt hey did get (ie. marijuana is bad)

Once the old people are all dead and the younger generation becomes the politicians, I suspect it will be legalized, or at least regulated less harshly.

I agree, when they eventually legalize pot I think a bong should be issued to all willing households as part of the investment in making it legal. Why didn't you just say vaporizer though? Are they not as good for the environment for some reason? Because I'm fairly sure they are even more healthy than a bong, but I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong.

I would love to hear how someone would go about de-criminalizing weed? What would be a good first step? What do you think the governments role should be?

Any ideas that foster a sane response on this subject is always welcome. I even want to hear from prohibitionist who want to stomp out the demon weed. What do you think would solve the problem?

its a fucking plant, if its gonna be illegal then every other plant should be aswell. Let people choose what they want to do with their lives, if they want to smoke "weed" all day long, let them.

 

decriminalization

The easiest step towards decriminalization would be for the federal government to respect the states which pass medical marijuana. California for example has passed medical marijuana (along with some other states), but it is still against the federal law to possess, buy, sell or manufacture marijuana. So if you were in california, with a "permit" to grow medical marijuana you could still be raided by the feds. The feds ought to respect the states rights (10th ammendment possibly?). If you do not support the decriminalization of marijuana, or the legality of medical marijuana you are free to move to another state. But if you do support it you are free to move to a state which does. But it's all gonna come down to taxes. If you remember years ago some states (namely Arizona) sold tax stamps for marijuana. And if you pay taxes on something it can not be illegal. A few years back when they had the super bowl in phoenix, people were selling taxed bags of pot. Some people were arrested for doing so although it was unjust. That is how the Boston Tea Party started.

 

The other issue with marijuana is its "demotivating" power. The government thinks people will just sit and watch cartoons and eat cereal. Not exactly good for our capitalist economy. Capitalism is why drugs will never be legal. The government would have a hard time running drugs to raise money for illegal wars if it was legal to run drugs. I sure hope marijuana/hemp (two totally different things by the way and neither are legal at the moment in the US) because I'm about to burn one!

as far as other drugs go, why isnt heroin legal? its a powerful pain medication. morphine is legal and its the same as heroin, just not as refined. opium is not legal and its the same as morphing, just not as refined. instead we have methadone, and it is a fact that people overdose from methadone. so why is methadone legal and not heroin? because the drug companies make methadone, farmers and chemists make heroin. the war in afghanistan, now the longest continuous war in us history, is based around the fact that they produce the heroin that is illegal in this country. a lot of americans have died in that war, and maybe less than would have died from heroin if it was legal, but the soldiers are dying for our country and the users are dying for themselves so therefor they are unproductive. save some good lives and end the drug wars, and let people kill themselves if they so choose. the will of the people is what freedom is all about.

 

Morphine is not the same as heroin. Heroin is diacetylmorphine, a chemical synthesized from morphine using several chemical reactions. Opium contains not only morphine, but codeine, thebaine, papaverine and many other chemicals.
