WHAT? I dont think this is right. I understand that not all Muslims are Jihadist, but what about the families of the people that died. This is like a slap in the face to them. America should not allow this to happen, not so close to that site. This building was damaged in the attacks, thats how close it is!! I just dont feel that this is right.

 

Why should it be a problem? Would you squawk so loudly if it were a Jewish temple? After all, the Israelis attacked an American naval vessel flying the American flag in international waters during the Six Day War. Ask yourself that, answer honestly, then ask yourself if you aren't being a bit hypocritical.

To me it is unfortunately very much a catch 22 situation. Emotionally I understand why it is upsetting to people from just a natural reaction to the idea. No matter how cool and unprejudiced we try to be, our emotions sometimes betray rational thought.

On the other hand if we truly are this great country that stands for freedom and especially freedom of religion and I am certainly one that thinks this is still a truly historically great country, then we have to embrace it. We as a country cannot turn on and off our freedoms for our emotions and prejudices. Because that is the exact recipe where freedoms are taken away permanently.

Personally reading some of the more vocal protesters and signs of the protesters many do not want our country to turn into Iraq as in we are a superior country. Well being superior is acting like one and that means not pointing at people that look different and have a different religion and in a broad ignorant stroke calling them evil. I also see a lot of xenophobes using the families who lost loved ones during the 9/11 attack as a shield to hide behind while promoting their cause.

 

Nah, they just bombed and strafed an American naval vessel in international waters and killed 34 American sailors and wounded 131. They got away with it by claming it was an accident, a case of mistaken identity, despite communication intercepts between their pilots and ground controllers that showed they knew it was an American naval vessel when the attack was ordered. Now, if you want to complain about building a radical jihadist Islamic church there, I got no problem with that; but this mosque is not that. Their building was damaged in the attacks, and members of their mosque were killed; they are victims as much as any of the other Americans that were there. It's your prejudice and bias that is causing you to squawk about it, you just can't admit it to yourself.

I used to live in NY I had friends in those buildings. As far as I am concerned when the (so called )good Muslims condemn what the bad one do then I may give some of them some slack.

As for this Mosk, would they allow a temple to be built in the desert?? I bet not.

Actually Steve, Jews, Christians and Muslims co-existed quite peacefully until quite recently. The Christians historically, have treated the Jews so much worse than the Arabs. Unfortunately, the zealots will always get more attention than the millions who live peacefully.

I can understand the point of view of people not wanting a 13 story mosque to be erected near ground zero. But I ask you something, should all Muslims suffer for the actions of Muslim extremists? Because the Muslims did not attack the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001; it was attacked by Muslim extremists.

Once you answer yourself that question, think if you might be a little harsh on the general public of Muslims, compared to where your anger should be directed, to a smaller group of Muslims.

I would lie if I was not initially upset about the news, but after thinking about it, it would be a great thing allowing this to happen. It shows that the US is understanding that is what not all Muslims that attacked the World Trade Center, but Muslim extremists. And by showing that we understand, we are showing compassion and understanding of their freedom to practice their religion in this country, which would be protected under the 1st amendment.

 

The Mosque is going to be 13 stories tall in an area where the average building is over 50 stories. Not to mention its going to be several blocks away, which in NYC means close to a mile.

If anything, what's pissing off us locals is that they're most likely going to have the mosque finished long before they finish rebuilding the Trade Centers. But that's politics.

No freethinker they didnt have anybody killed in that mosque on 9-11 because it wasnt a mosque, it was a clothes store!! And whoever called me a right winger, I am not, I am a proud registered democrat. My point is, go to there country and try to build a Christian church. It wont happen!!! So if you wanna preach intolerance, preach it to them. They believe that all Christians are evil, and we are all dogs. Go read what the families of the people who died feel about this before you say that I am hiding behind them.
