I have seen this debate non stop on a board I was on before. The old definition of a fetish in medical books was the "unable to orgasm without fantasizing or it present".

Modern definition of fetish is a more generic and less absolute. That a fetish is something a person is really into that is not traditional that may or may not prevent them from orgasm if not present or in their mind. In other words their is a sexual dysfunctional level and really into something but no addicted to level.

Plenty of people are really into things that from every angle could look like the old school fetish definition but do not have to have it to have wonderful sex. I have always seen the rational of people promoting the old school definition as absolute to be one of being insecure, sorry. To me it is if I am into something big time I am not abnormal because I do not need to be into it to orgasm. While most people and hence why the definition has changed over the years to a broader form use it as a description to express what they are into.
