I see no possibility the Tea Party can destroy the US, because they after all the far right tail end of the Republican Party to begin with and they will end up cannibalizing each other and getting Democrats elected.

Which is a good thing for the US.

Its easy for people to be pissed off. Its a lot harder to actually accept reality and solve problems. The Tea Party has never been more than a manipulated fringe group that will be slip sliding away.

 

My main problem with them is not that they're likely to have any electoral success. In fact, they'll probably prevent the Republican Party from achieving success.

No, my problem is that they've lowered the bar still further on American political discourse. They've validated the ranting of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. They've made it okay to threaten elected officials with "second amendment solutions". They all sound just like a Deidre whose prescriptions have run out.

 

Please, the Tea Party has achieved exactly what it has set out to do, stopping Body Odor and the Democrats extremely unAmerican agenda from going forward and exposing them for the losers they will soon be. +

 

Ok I have to go along with that. They've made hate and discontent more fashionable and helped validate the far right crazies. That is dangerous and destructive. It also creates even more divisions at a time when rational thinking would be to unite to solve our real problems.

But they are tail spinning now and I think they are a fad that will pass.

But it is hilarious to me to watch them promote candidates like Rand Paul and Sharon Angel just to have them backpedal faster than a crawfish from a Cajun from the wacky Tea Party positions once they find out the rest of the country thinks they're bat shit crazy.

 

Yeah, it is kind of amusing to see them denying that they actually said what they said the day before. They're all busily sanitizing their websites to eradicate all that obvious batshit craziness.

But I do agree with you, Stumbler, that they will turn out to be a mere footnote in history.

 

I sure wish I could agree with you. The Tea Party has passion, and there has not been a significant backlash against the movement. During the late 1960's and early 1970's there was passion on the left, but a much larger, if quiet backlash on the right. There really was a "Silent Majority" that disliked the anti-war demonstrators and supported President Nixon's war policy in Vietnam.

 

And the "Silent Majority" is a footnote in history, too. They can take credit for prolonging the war if they really want to....but supporting Nixon is not exactly a position most people today would be proud of.
