Took a while to think this situation out

Kashmir, has and always will be the most annoying symbol of partition that still hasn't been healed after 63 Years. We (YES we as in both India & Pakistan) has shed too much blood over a mountain range, fought too many wars that have affected the Indian (Referring to us as a PEOPLE not just India) psyche that it has become near impossible to have a proper dialogue about the MISTAKES of the past.

Kashmir no longer cares about being part of India or Pakistan, they have started to hit the point where they don't want ether power to have anything to do with their future. They have been occupied by both "friendly" neighbours and had to deal with the initial squawking of political leaders (both sides), the continued shelling of their homes (by both sides), and continued devastation of their region (or has everyone else forgot about the earthquake that hit their back in 2005).

Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka. These are the countries that have yet to let the wounds of partition, revolution, racial politics and religious strife heal. We blame the British for a quick and early departure from our shores (My grandfather still can't stand the name Mountbatten) even though they were responding to both internal pressures (Britons just wanting the empire to end) and external pressures (Quit India, End of 2 World Wars, Debts owed to its allies, and just exhaustion) to leave. Yes they could have stayed longer to help make the transition easier, yes they could have done more then sell both sides arms to fight each other in the early years of our nations creation, but it was no longer in there interest. They (The British) really did do as a good of a job as to be expected of a former colonial power (Look at France, Belgium, Portugal if you need examples of exit strategies) in trying to make things peaceful before the end of their mandate. In hindsight they failed, but at a certain point it had to become our responsibility to fix their mistakes. We never did.

India Acted Rashly in its securing of both Hyderabad, Kashmir and all the Raj Kingdoms in order to unify its borders. Pakistan never had the means to fight for Kashmir but it tried and that is how it ended up with the 1/3 Portion it still has to this day. Instead of trying to talk it out and fix these problems we pretty much entered a period of our own little cold war (at times turned hot) between 3 Brothers (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka (Bangladesh didn't exist at this time) divided by religion and of course politics.

It's the politics of these 4 brothers that really confuses the hell out of me. You have Pakistan religiously Muslim, calling for the restoration of Kashmir to its rightful place (as part of Pakistan) and continually building up to fight it's much larger/wealthier counterpart of India. Even Better for Pakistan it is now having to deal with its own monster created to fight off the Russians/Irani Influence along it's Northwest boarder. You have India becoming involved on the world stage as a Regional Power surrounded by hostiles (Pakistan, China, East Pakistan for a time, and stability issues in Sri Lanka) while still spending a fair chunk of its income dealing with defence against Pakistan, a growing threats in the east, west and south (Maoist Rebels, Tamil unrest, terrorist cells supposedly supplied by the ISI (Because we can all grab military C4 from any military base)) and having to deal with Nationalist who want a restoration of a fully Hindu India (not the most pleasant idea because this would also result in the restoration of the caste system as well). Sri Lanka, up until recently, was dealing with one of the longest running civil wars and had originally asked for Indian participation as peacekeepers but that didn't end very well at all for Indian Interest. I haven't mention Bangladesh because since inception they have been dealing primarily with their own concerns and have really been having a rough ride the whole time.

Really what this all is boiling down to is a lot of frustration on the parts of Muslims, Hindus, Sheiks, Tamils, Pakis, Indians, Lankies, Kashmiri's, etc, at the power plays made by our politicians to try and prove that they are right and this is the way it should be. We needed to stay united 63 years ago so our people would not be so busy fighting and killing each other over nothing, we needed to get these racial politics out of the way as we are all one people, we needed to move beyond the differences of religion into a brighter future. But we chose not to do that, we chose to keep to the boarders drawn by a viceroy on the go as the most fair option, a 3 state solution if you may.

There is no Kashmir a burning valley under Indian army rule, this thread should be titled The Indian Sub-continent A place burning and flooding over nothing.

This is one of the most informative things I've read on this forum in quite sometime. I really hope you hang around and can answer some questions. Like whether Pakistan's government is in control of their secret agencies or is it the other way around.

I've got a growing concern there. On the one hand we have may people like U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon saying this is the worst natural disaster he's seen.

That would have to be an incredible amount of death and destruction and yet I am not seeing any frantic efforts to get help to Pakistan. That would be a terrible mistake and I think just sink our efforts to bring peace to that region.

Pakistan is supposed to be our ally and if we ignore them after the help we gave to Haiti, I think that would something the terrorists could and will use to turn the majority of Pakistanis against us.

One of my concerns is that we (the US and the West) don't just stand on the sidelines. That's exactly how we lost Gaza to Hamas. While Israel was busy persecuting and killing the Palestinians and the US was busy ignoring them Hamas was busy providing food and shelter, medical care and schools. Its little wonder the Palestinians in Gaza saw them has heroes instead of terrorists.

After as much progress as Pakistan has made against the Taliban in the past couple years it would be a shame to let them look like heroes when we could be pouring aid into those folks.
