Asserting something without evidence is sloppy thinking. You can tell me that there is something more, as in some kind of higher being, but since there is nothing to support that assertion, it can be dismissed without consideration. There is absolutely no reason why you or any other theist should be taken any more seriously than the nutter in the padded room that claims he's the reincarnation of Henry VIII.

It always comes back to that little problem of evidence. You have none. You say evidence for god is 'all around' us but it still gets us no where. Once again, replace god with toe jam or any other non sequitor, and you still haven't advanced the idea one tiny little bit. What does it mean to say that evidence for god is all around us? Nothing, that's what it means. It's a meaningless statement.

Yes, the theory of how Evolution works is theoretical, in the same way germs and atoms are theoretical, all of which are highly substantiated with evidence but can change with new evidence. But the fact that evolution occurs is, well, fact.

 

there is a huge difference between the scientific definition of theory and the layman definition. Theory, hypothesis are used in non-technical contexts to mean an untested idea or opinion. A theory in technical use is a more or less verified or established explanation accounting for known facts or phenomena.

My objection is that on this site people state as fact that which is widely held to be true but to which there is still a element of doubt. I would like those who do this to at least acknowledge the possibility of alternatives. :rose:

For our friend that began this topic: You are right on the mark. Just as everyone here is making a choice to say whether or not Atheism is a religion, Atheists choose to not have a Blind Faith.

All the conceptualizations and philosophizing and dissections of language do not cover up the simple fact that Atheism is the conscious choice to refuse to have blind faith in a supreme being. What does this have to do with Religion, or Institution? Not a damn thing. It does if you choose to convolute the waters, but again, that is a choice. A choice to be stupid.

I am not an Atheist. My Master is a Supreme Being. I suppose that should be "THE" Supreme Being. Contrary to this thread's originator's claim, Atheism is not a fucking belief. That would be more along the lines of Hedonism, I guess, or whatever it is that David Koresh was espousing. He was getting a lot, right? His servants were worshiping him, and he got laid quite a bit, even by little girls.
