Ok Yes you should tell someone, but you need to consult an attorney first and cover your ass.

1. Did you have any kind of permission to be on his computer?
2. Did you have permission to access his drive?

Although he is definitely in the wrong it could come back to bite you in the ass if you did not. Because accessing another computer without expressed permission is actually a criminal offense now, just as burglary and the data you copied off the drive can be considered electronic theft of data no different than that of a hacker. There are many new laws related to data theft and access. If the computer was public like a library or office network computer and you came across the files, that can be construed as public domain. But a home personal computer is not considered public domain. There has to be an implied and or out right specified approval for you to access he computer. Just because you say he kept movies on the computer, does not allow you access, and if the data was on another drive as you say, and not connected to the computer at the time, I hate to say it your ass is grass with regards to data theft, as you will have to show you were specifically given permission to access the drive. Basically if he erases the data on the computer, you have a record of the files, but they are worthless, because you stole them and they cannot be used as evidence.

Also, do not send them out, do not use his e-mail and send them out, because besides the civil liabilities, you open yourself up to quite a few federal related data crimes if you do. Take the files to the DA if you wish, tell them how you got them, let them start an investigation, and they will more than likely sting him. But you better see an attorney first to cover your ass.

Your best bet may be to confront him, let him know you found the files and that you and your wife will be watching him. The problem is that now that you have a copy, he can claim you planted the data on the computer and that the data files are yours. Data tags on files can be altered, including date tags, computer id, meta data and such. This is why I advise you to get counsel first.
