I am wondering is it possible for homosexuality to be genetic? I'm not joking or trying to offend anybody or anything like that. The reason i ask this is becasue i have a gay aunt and two gay cousins and i've also recently discovered that i am bisexual. any thoughts?

 

There have been quite a few studies showing that genetics does appear to play a role in determining sexual orientation. I'm not certain, but I think I read somewhere about scientists discovering a distinct "Gay Gene". Studies also indicate that, for gay men at least, their brains are structured slightly differently from a straight mans.

One explanation for these differences include exposure to abnormally high amounts of testosterone in the womb.

It's all very interesting to read about, but I'm certainly no expert on the subject. I suggest researching the subject independently.

alright yea that makes sense then. I'm currently majoring in psychology and in class we have roughly gone over this, and according to my professor no "gay gene" has ever been found but that there still may be a link in genetics or something. idk i was just wondering thanks

 

Studying identical twins can provide an insight just as with other traits waiting to be determined if they are genetic or shaped by the environment or everything in between. These experiments, if I am not mistaken, deemed homosexuality to be around 60% genetic. So there clearly are straight individuals who have a gay identical twin.

I doubt that a "gay gene" will ever be found. It's more likely that a combination of a set of genes in conjunction with cues from the environment (like the higher T in the womb, possibly affecting e.g. the suprachiasmatic nucleus size in the hypothalamus during the development) triggers it.

 

I really do not know, actually, and have wondered about the same thing myself. Within my family there are two gay children, and one bi-sexual - and I also know of a couple of families that have more than one gay child. One things for sure is that homosexuality isn't a choice, so possibly it's a thing that happens to children in the womb or the mother is a carrier of a certain gene or whatever.

There are people that you can look at that have certain facial features/structure and can tell that they are gay. Just like you can look at some one with downs syndrome and tell that they have downs syndrome. Going off that, I think it's safe to say that in some people being gay/lesbian is a form of mental retardation. For others I think it is a choice that they have made, for some reason, to swing that way.

There is a theory in molecular biology that homosexuality may be the result of DNA actively trying to control population levels, to make sure resources don't get used up. There's even an idea that the mothers DNA reacts to a male fetus in such a way that it tries to alter the DNA of the fetus to purposfully make it homosexual so that it won't pass on it's genes.

Our DNA has a certain malevolent intelligence. It's fascinating. And horrifying.

I gotta disagree with Captain Trips; I have many gay friends who I would have never guessed that they were gay until they came out. (And I consider myself to have quite an accurate "gaydar.")

Have you seen the big hairy biker men who look completely and utterly straight (by general definition - personally I think men with big bushy beards have something to hide) but are in fact gay? I think Portia De Rossi is a good example of a lesbian who doesn't fit the "lesbian stereotype."

Also comparing gay people to individuals with down syndrome, I mean come on, you're just asking to get peoples blood boiling. I get the point you were making but I completely disagree with it.

 

I don't believe there is a gay gene, such as if your mom is gay then you're gay too. I believe what happens is some sort of mutation that changes the individual body. Mutation is not a bad word!! We all have them and that's how we survive as a species! So don't think I'm calling gays mutants because we all are. Anyways, I think it's something that happens in the DNA (concerning genes) on an individual basis. Because if it were just genetic, then there would be no gays because all the straight couples passed on their "straightness" onto their kids. But that isn't the case, so I believe it's just an individual mutation that makes them be born gay.
