But you're the expert in the class system - and I am asking you, as someone who seems more knowledgeable, perhaps. What are they? Is there some class below the working class?

In today's societal model, does the old, Marxian model still have sufficient relevance? Does it cover all possible modes of society? In a society such as yours where the ability to survive purely on state benefits does not exist to the same degree - at least, I do not believe it does, but please correct me if I am wrong - then the Marxian model - from my understanding - holds up sufficiently. There is simply not the quantity of 'spongers' that exist in the UK.

But if the model doesn't hold for everywhere, what should it be replaced with? I'm not trying to... goad you. I am genuinely curious. As I said before, I don't want to engage in a pissing contest; I'm trying to have some kind of sustainable dialogue whereby I understand more about the US class system; it's quite clearly worlds apart from the UK one.

If I may, could I ask some questions? Where, on the class scale, would you put the unemployed? What about drug dealers? Those who survive on benefits - if that's possible in the US? Here in the UK, they are all lumped in 'working class', along with tradesmen and labourers.

Tradesmen and labourers are considered Working class.

Drug dealers and the like are considered criminal class, but not really a "class' per se.

Plenty of people from the suburbs are unemployed or drug dealers or living off of benefits. Drug dealers can come from the working class, sure, and so can people who are unemployed or living off of benefits, but if they are then they're not "spongers". It's about what is available to you, not what you choose. This is Sociology 101 shit.

Have you ever been to public school in working class/ghetto areas? Have you ever been to public school in areas with better opportunities? Huge difference. It's not about whether the education is free or not. It's about the quality of that education and in today's world it is most definitely about what college you went to. Only wealthy people can get into the best schools without some major help. This is no secret. Class mobility only exists with things like sports, music, the entertainment industry, etc anymore.

If somebody doesn't have the opportunities then by definition, they are not a sponger. A working class person will use said benefits to create opportunities for him/herself.

Yes, he is still working class. He is a self-made man. His kids won't be working class unless he doesn't use his better place to give them what he didn't. By the same token, if some kid with better opportunities fucks up his life and ends up in a ghetto or working class area or working a working class job, he isn't working class but his kids will be.
