That's pretty much it in a nutshell when it comes to factory/mill towns. As you go further back in history though, you see that really the biggest difference between the working class/ghetto class and the wealthy tends to be about where their ancestors came from and how much money they had when they came over, with exceptions of course. The original working class were those who were discriminated against by the original wealthy land owners/mill owners/factory owners/etc. Really, the differences have been there since the beginning. That's something a lot of people don't seem to grasp about the US, including its own citizens.

You could say the same about the owners vs. players in athletics, or about musicians vs. record labels, actors vs. film companies, etc.

But one thing that I made clear in the post I linked you to, that I would like to make clear again is that cities the way they are now did not exist at first. The people who came over first started their own towns and built their own houses, etc, and then they built factories/mills/quarries(well you can't build a quarry but you know what I mean) where they would make money by employing people. This is of course not including the people who were rounded up and forced to go to the New World or the indentured servants who were basically slaves. Then, they built tenements or other living spaces around the quarries/mills/factories/etc where the immigrants who worked there lived. That's how places like what you're talking about started. Those places became towns because of the people who lived there and how they banded together during hardship. A lot of the original working class worked their asses off and sacrificed so their kids could have better, and so on and so forth. That's where most of the current middle class comes from. The original middle class was basically people who weren't immigrants, who owned land, and who had money but weren't quite on the level of the ruling class. These people make up most of the wealthy class along with the descendants of the original ruling class. Now of course, the middle class and even some of the working class had opportunities due to cities being built around factories/mills/mines/etc and thus opportunities for their employees being built around them. Most of the working class didn't have the money to do anything with their education though. They were just killing time until it was their time to go to work. Most of their descendants are just as stuck as they were.

Anyway, so the wealthy who were very mobile and not restricted to one place went wherever they could make the most money or wherever was the nicest for them to live, and they always kept the two very seperate. That's of course only in the Northeast and Rust Belt areas of the Midwest. Everywhere else has differences that are due to slavery and things like that. The Southern slave owners created slave territories in the Midwest, Southwest, and the West. Then when slavery was abolished, they used discrimination/segregation, and then when they couldn't do that anymore, they up and left, leaving behind the only places the formerly segregated could live.

 

That seems to bear out what I've learned through school.

Interesting. I don't think there was anything like that in the US but I could be wrong.

The way they're preserving the buildings and the town and all of that as a tourist attraction, that's what I wanted them to do with my hometown. Instead, they continue to bend over for whatever companies want to come in and make money, and cover up all of the history and the suffering and the hardships that those people went through, and thus cover up history/culture of the town and its people.

There is not a single site around here of a mill or quarry or factory that has been preserved. Places that stand as testimony to the day to day living of the workers/inhabitants constantly get demolished to make way for houses or businesses so people can get screwed all over again. The only way to learn the history of the town I grew up in is to ask people who grew up there over the years, mostly from before the mills/factories closed.

You know what does get preserved? The houses of the original wealthy landowners. They get turned into museums and tourist attractions.

 

Due to the presence of fools, wise people stand out.

What is all the fuss about being "working class"?

I thought nobody really chooses to be "working class" or much less brags about it. It is just a situation you find yourself in by birth or other circumstances. And you can also change it if you are lucky or gifted, determined, etc.

It is like bragging that you are forced to be a slave, working a more or less degrading, mechanical job, for an insultingly low wage and being in a situation where all the conditions are decided by others, higher in hierarchy.
Of course one can make the best out of a situation, possibly make it temporary and change jobs and get better conditions/pay, etc. if possible, but it is really not something to brag about.

So, Baller, you are proud to be a slave, basically?
