Tonight I will be joining friends to gather in a local park and light a fire, release sky lanterns and generally celebrate the solstice. To me it's a more meaningful and natural date to mark.

Of course we still celebrate Christmas as a time for family to get together but more as a way of continuing a tradition. It's more because of our culture - shops are closed, people are off work (except my son's gf who works Christmas day for the extra money) and everything is geared towards it. We all acknowledge that it's kind of artificial to get presents, but we still do it to express our love for each other. We don't spend a lot, but it's also a good opportunity to save up for things that we need first of all, and want if we still have enough left over. It's a damn good reason to have a big celebration just as it's dark and cold (even more so this year - minus 10C as I sepak at 7.40am). We try to find as many reasons as we can to get out and do things in January and February too, to keep our spirits up through the winter.

 

Christmas is many things to many people





Christmas means different things to different people. For me, it's like a warm blanket you wrap around you. It's remembering everything and everyone you love. It's a time to rejoice, with your family, with your faith. It's a time see the world through a child's eyes.

Wishing you all the warmth the holidays can bring and peace for the New Year.

 

I have so much to say about this time of year but I really can't be bothered to explain how I feel. Needless to say I will wish for a certain somebody to leave a certain somebody in my stocking at the bottom of my bed.

 

Glad you liked it. I'm surprised more people don't know this. Do they really believe that this amalgamation of mythical figures called Jesus Christ was actually born exactly on December 25th? Even if you use the bible as reference (the bible never stated his date of birth btw) it mentioned that shepherds were out in the fields feeding their flock the night he was born. In Palestine, were Jesus was allegedly born (yes Bethlehem was located in Palestine) It's bitterly cold that time of the year and the ground would be frozen. Shepherds would not be out feeding their flock at night.

Christmas trees. Nobody noticed something weird about people decorating conifer trees that time of the year? what's the connection with Jesus? Don't you people do research before you blindly celebrate and believe something?

I love spending time with my family and cooking all the goodies everyone loves...It's like putting on your favorite soft, comfy pajamas...Go ahead and call me "corny!" It just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside...

 

The bit I love about religion is when people question what god looked like, The priests had no answer so it was pretty much, Ummmm Zeus .... Yepo Zeus that works Nice and familiar quiets the malcontents :excited:

most christian holidays are just pagan holidays. even Easter named after the pagan god Eastre the great mother goddess of saxon people. they just took pagan holidays put a christian spin on it so as to keep the pagans in line and letting them celebrate ancient rituals. which if the name was different no eing burned at the stake for being a heretic.
