You proved that aggressive behavior and violence on television have a very weak correlation. But you did not prove that one causes the other.

So you evidently do not comprehend that you are standing on one leg on this argument.

How about using proof that actually proves your point, because not one of those links shows that television violence causes aggressive behavior.

So when you actually find proof that there is a causation, and not just a weak correlation, maybe you will have an argument.

 

Of course a campaign event is political, but that does not mean that the shooter's motive was political as well. I am starting to believe that you have trouble with the difference between correlation and causation. Just because two things are correlated, that does not imply that one causes the other to happen. In this instance, the reason as to why Giffords was killed, is yet to be determined. So, no one knows the true story. I was just giving an alternative reason, which would not be a politically based reason.

Your reasoning is basically if he had an argument with a priest, then this whole thing would be a matter of religion. But that is not true. Because a priest can say things that do not have religious basis, yet a person can not like what they have to say. And if the priest were to be killed because of what was said, that would be a personal vendetta against the priest, not against the religion. You starting to grasp the difference now?

No one knows the answer as to why Giffords was killed. And if she was not a congresswoman, would she have been killed, no one will ever know. Because she is a congresswoman. We can play what if games for the rest of our lives, how about we just wait until the conclusion comes out as to why he killed her. Because if you had read any of the links I had shown before, you would have learned that not only is Loughner mentally ill, but also a chronic user of drugs.

UPDATE: Gabriel Giffords Dr. just stated on an interview that he suspects a 101% recovery, although it is to early how she will do with her cognitive skills and such.

 

You're the one arguing for personal responsibility, OT. I'm not proposing to prosecute anyone. I'm simply suggesting they exercise restraint with regard to their inflammatory rhetoric, and recognize that it does great harm.

Motivating the mentaly ill to do something or not do something isnt as cut and dried as we would like to think. Paranoid schitzophrenics will hear voices from a variety of places including thier TV or radio and those voices arent always nice. When I transport schitzophrenics I have to be careful about whats playing on the radio for instance even though they are heavily medicated.They will still hear things that to you and I dont make sense but to them its as real as anything else. Throw in some violent tendancies and alittle personal frustration and the possibility of violence becomes very real. The connections they make in thier little brains arent even necessarily dependant on outside influences but things they hear or see will have an effect...just not the same effect they have on others.

John Hinckley Jr. thought it would be a good idea to take a shot at president Reagan to gain the attention of Jodie Foster. His obsession with her had brought him to the conclusion that something like that would help him gain favorable attention from her.

This clown who shot Giffords was motivated by things that nobody realy has any reasonable control over without the help of powerful antipsychotic medications and constant monitoring.

 

When I see video of a woman at a Tea Party rally screeching that she "wants her country back", I find myself wondering, first, what she wants it back from, and second, what it would take to tip her over the edge into violence.

The answer to the first, I suspect, is that she wants to take it back from that Kenyan-born Muslim terrorist sympathizer in the White House...and the answer to the second is, not much. We would do well to recognize that there ARE mentally disturbed people in our midst, and they respond to what is said in ways that are not always predictable.

Determining the meaning of words or phrases is not a precise science, to use this as a reason to dismiss her outrage is grasping at straws.
