I would point out that once one commits to a committing a crime, whether you're getting 20 or 25 years tends not to be so much a concern.

 

I have a keen interest in firearms, but it will never be a political issue for me, and I have no illusions that someone owning some AK's will make any sort of difference if a hostile force levels my apartment block with arty

 

It is aimed at those whom are naive enough to believe that an invading hostile force can be stopped by a cache of small arms. More than likely, should an invading force attack the US the first thing they will do is remove the infrastructure. Should the populace be resistant and open fire on the invading force, the use of chemical or biological weapons would be the next logical course. And of course, there is the very reliable neutron bomb.

It is kind of hard to be firing on the enemy when the enemy has leveled your dwelling and you with a HE artillery shell.

 

Talked to plenty of people who think they will somehow be the defenders of the order some day if the shit hits the fan.

At the risk of sounding like Charleton Heston, when owning a gun is made into a criminal act, only criminals will have guns.

They're here. For better or worse, they've been a part of our part of civilization for centuries. There was a time when we really needed them. There were mountain lions, bear, wolves, those pesky Indians, and assorted other everyday threats. Plus, then as now, there were sick people who just wound up needing to be shot.

Do I own a gun? No, never did. Used to do some target shooting with my Dad, but never killed anything. That doesn't make me a pussy, anymore than owning an arsenal makes someone a man.

If you want to own a gun or seven, fine. Just don't be an asshole. And remember, zombies might NOT be the next attack. What if the enemy likes the feel of bullets hitting it's hide?

 

No, those are small back water countries who were armed by foreign aid. Invading the US would be an entirely different matter. It is well known the US has armed citizens so why take the chance in using Infantry when tech can do the job so much better?

If China or Russia decided to invade your country I have absolutely no doubt they would be employing the latest bio-chemical weapons. And should there be any survivors long range artillery would solve the problem of entrenched citizens. And it is highly unlikely that the US would be firing Nukes on it's own soil to deter them. And have no illusions, the armed forces and tech of other superpowers is just as good as yours, if not better.

So the point being is arming yourself in case of a foreign invasion is simply a myth to justify buying more weapons.
