BBC,CNN,FOX all are saying there could be another quake on its way.

HONOLULU – The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has widened its tsunami warning to include Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific Ocean.

The warning was issued Thursday at 9:31 HST p.m. Sirens were sounded shortly afterward in Honolulu alerting people in coastal areas to evacuate.

The warning follows a massive earthquake that has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. The first waves were expected to arrive at 2:55 a.m. HST Friday.

The warning also includes Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Central and South America. The coast of North America is not included in the warning.
Tsunami warnings are issued due to the imminent threat of a tsunami.

 

I think we all can have some compassion or empathy. There are fires started too, but nuke leaks, so far, don't seem to be happening, so this is good news.

I wonder if we have any members on forums from Japan, or relatives.Maybe Kimiko?

only 80miles off coast of Japan, in NE so news says, and only 15 minutes warning for some:-o

 

I tried everything. No response at all.

Singapore, March 11 (Reuters) - Some Japanese nuclear power plants and oil refineries were shut down on Friday and a major steel plant was ablaze after a powerful earthquake rocked the country, buckling roads, triggering landslides and knocking out power to homes and businesses.

The Bank of Japan, which has been struggling to boost the anaemic economy, said it would do its utmost to ensure financial market stability as air force jets raced toward the northeast coast to determine the extent of the damage from the 8.9 magnitude quake.

 

oh no! I am sure that it is a top priority to get comm lines restored, but other things are likely first priority, safety and evac, etc.

5 dead for current death toll in Japan, many missing.
Emergency shutdowns, are helpful, and stock market support(PP's post) can give people some sense of security for aftermath.

 

This is spreading. All countries in the pacific are being evacuated. Mainland us & canada are the only ones not at risk except for california. The whole pacific rim is at risk.

 

The death toll is at 8 now.

Red Cross Geneva is saying tsunami traveling across Pacific is higher than many islands there. via BBC.
It hits hawaii in 4 hrs time and even in Alaska people now are on alert.

I would like to visit, or even work in Japan, someday. There's a lot of support for the Japanese and soon other countries that will be hit, many in Pacific, as Saya posted.

Why would you have nuclear reactors in a country prone to Earthquakes?

It all depends on the underwater terrain - some are steep and won't be affected badly - its the ones with long sloping approaches that will suffer.
