We have established that Kim and I see things differently. No use in going any further with it.

 

In 1950 the crime rate was lower. The illegitimacy rate was much lower. More people were in unions. The unemployment rate was lower. There was less economic inequality. Employment was more secure. By my criteria some things have gotten better. Some things have gotten worse.

People like different things. These are not really debatable. Kimiko would have been unhappy back then, but formost would have been happier.

What is "morality"?
According to Merriam-Webster

No place is religion mentioned, morality to me is the adherence to community standards on human behavior. These standards change just as the human condition changes.

In 1950, it was socially unacceptable for a woman to have a child without benefit of matrimony. Thus, by community standards it was "immoral". A single parent who was not put in that position by the death of his/her spouse was ostracized in most US communities. Today, our society, in general, has accepted the realities that such single parents are not only acceptable, but preferred over a two parent household that is not amicable.

In 1950, it was morally unacceptable for anyone to marry outside his/her race. Today, such unions are common in our society, the standards have again adapted to the realities of human life. We are all the same under our skins, we all have the same desires.

However, those who hold to the old moral standards can be vocal, but they are fast becoming extinct. In the future, many of the beliefs that we hold dear today, will be swept aside by our childrens children, we see glimpses of it today. Present choices in music, dress and behavior are quite disturbing to many in here, these things help form the standards under which our future generations will be judged.

 

You make me sound so egotistical....what I was trying to say was that ANY woman could do the same. It was a statement about men, not about my particular charms.

Well...for the record, that reliance on the Bible that you extol is completely at odds with the Constitution. Furthermore, I think it's wonderful that we can now marry who we want to marry, divorce our husbands if they abuse us, and that those of us who are not Christian are not forced to listen to your Christian prayers before a City Council meeting, nor are our children subjected to them during school. We are citizens of this country too.

 

And radio and TV. I dare say that most of my generation believed what they saw and heard back then until they got into their early twenties. We were thought to respect our elders, and that included not questioning their bible or authority.
At age 17 I found the best thing for me was to avoid discussion of it.

Had you been back there you probably would have believed it or most of it as well.
