  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

    Best regards,

    StanleyOG.

    Big problems

CFH420 . . .Thank you for showing this. I would suggest that it is not only the U.S. that this applies to but, in fact, all the so called First World Countries. I know we are seeing the same general outline in New Zealand and Australia.

    India, too.

This is very important. It is not new, but it is getting much worse.

Nearly ten years ago, the major American universities (the liberal Eastern U.S. universities especially) undertook studies to police themselves.

Personally, I suspect they have given up.

Not watching an hour long video on youtube. Nope. Not gonna happen.

But, there is this disposition to encourage students in high school to go and enter college. On paper, furthering one's education sounds good and looks good also. The problem is, most people cannot afford to go to college. So, lo and behold, the government offers you something called a student loan.

What is a student loan, you ask?

Well, let me tell you something. First, there is a price to pay when you borrow money you don't have. Look at how atrocious credit card debt has become. There are individuals who are thousands upon thousands of dollars in debt from buying life's luxuries and then realizing once their spending limit tops off, that none of what they bought is free.

A student loan is no better than issuing Joe Everybody a credit card and sending him into the world, free to spend to his heart's content. Companies have filed for bankruptcy, as have home owners due to one thing: not having enough money. Using one's home and business to help pay other bills and acquiring a second mortgage on your home, while at the time it seems like a solution only burdens you further.

Debt climbs and skyrockets to unproportionate heights, sometimes with taxes and a borrowers fee, is twice what you originally owed.

I didn't watch the video either. ;) But, being from Boston/Cambridge/Harvard Square, this topic is of more than a little interest to me.

It is complex. Scholarly papers have been committed to it, long before it finally filtered down to Youtube (see my link above). But in a nutshell, you are right that funding and the subsidy system are huge factors. Our best universities (not just in the U.S., but throughout the developed world) have become meat factories.

In my opinion (being a proponent of Rand and objectivism), this is yet another manifestation of the cannibalism that is eating us alive. College students and the parents who put them into college have become yet another block of the gimme-mob. The little fuckers bought A's with cash. And the sad part of it is, more often than not, they are buying those A's with tax revenue looted from a rapidly diminishing constituency of the U.S. economy.

Hey! OHT! By the way... two things.

First thing: the first two lines of your latest poem are incredible.

Second thing: what the fuck am I doing here, when I could be posting more of my own book?

Oh... right. No one is reading stories at the forum tonight. They're either here, or bitching about trolls.

    (sigh)

I haven't got time to spare to watch an hours diatribe, but it as been known for years that most of the degrees issued by universities in England are not really worth much, you can if you want get a degree on Manchester United FC, well that will help in the job market. More emphasis needs to be placed on vocational studies but that leads to people leaving formal education earlier and that then puts extra numbers on the unemployed, much better to have idol students than idol dole seekers for any government.

Back in the way back...the late 1800's, the robber barrons established what we know today as the public education system in an effort to create good workers. The idea was simple realy. Teach people enough that when they reched a certain age they would be useful to the businesses that would hire them but not enough to actualy be able to think. Thinking wasnt what they were after. They wanted a pool of people to draw from that would need less training and would be able to do things like math and spelling and reading so that they would be more profitable to have around. But the system makes a point to not teach things like critical thinking or real problem solving. They avoid subjects that create independant thinking and ingenuity or creativity of thought that might result in unwanted competition. This was how our public education system was designed. It wasnt until jobs became more complex that the idea of sending someone to college made them somewhat more profitable to have around. It was only a matter of time befor that system became corrupt and turned into a for profit game just like the stock market, medical care, food, etc. Face it...its all a game.

And you wonder why I want to build a doomsday device...now you are starting to get the picture.

Ya know...my sister went to college in the early 1970's and paid for it all on a part time job. She and her best friend/room mate also had a nice appartment. Thsi was at the University of Washington...not exactly Bob's college and Bar Tending Academy. My parents didnt help one bit. She paid for it all her self.

For the people who haven't watched, you should really watch some...at least maybe 20 minutes of it. Its not all about college loans...its about the large gap of people its creating this generation that are going to be royally screwed...and how the older generations are going to be massively effected.

It also shows you how in this new healthcare bill, a law was snuck in that the government will control all student loans...making you a wage slave.

A professional degree from an elite college or university is definitely worth getting. Unfortunately, unless you are born on the extreme right of the bell curve, you will not be able to get one.

If such a degree is not an option, you should learn a trade. A degree in the liberal arts or social sciences from an obscure college is unlikely to make a positive difference in your life, unless you acquire social skills by going to parties and bars.

If you love the liberal arts and social sciences, like I do, study them on your own. All you need for that study is a library card.

    too bloody true Rich

we have a stupid target in the UK to get 50% of students in to university

that is ridiculous it means average people in university which is ridiculous

university's are for the most intelligent of us say the top 25% if we reduced the number of places in the UK we could go back to free university's
