Do Mormons in the US still practice it? I thought they could get around the law buy having religious but not legally binding weddings.

 

Officially, the Church of Latter Day Saints abandoned polygamy in the 19th century after the US sent troops to Utah. I don't think it was fully stamped out for a few generations. Today only unofficial Mormon offshoots openly practice polygamy, because it is against the law in all states. A fair number of them have practiced underage marriage, as well, which has provided an easy pretext for legal interference.

 

Because in most ancient cultures, men would take care of their wives (bringing in food, resources, money, safety etc) & thus the wife could survive. If a woman became a widow, there were few single men she could move on to, thus polygamy was acceptable as it helped the women to live comfortably rather than alone, wherein they would struggle.

but in today society, where women don't depend on men for everything and sex is more for just procreation, there is no reason why it can't be a women with multiple husband or an open marriage.

 

No law against living with as many people as you like. Just don't invite the government into your situation. I've read somewhere that the polygamous Mormons ran afoul by applying for government support, "welfare" for the children that resulted.

couple of things to remember. Women often have a larger sex drive and capacity then men. they can have a lot more sex over a short period of time and cum every time. Men need a rest to recuperate so they can get it up again.
I think women could deal with more husbands or lovers a lot better than men.

Also, it has been shown that women who live together in groups often have their cycles match. So guys do you want to be living with 3 or 4 women who all have PMS at the same time??(!)

It was population practical. One woman having 10 husbands could still only produce one child at a time; but one man having 10 wives could produce 10 offspring at a time. Thus villages would grow rapidly producing more warriors and workers for the tribe.

Sure, women can have sex faster than men, but once she is pregnant...that's it. Also men were always seen as the main source of income and sustainance. The purpose was to have as many sons as possible to create a dominant secure society.

Also I believe its an emotional addition. Every one knows that men and women do not operate on the same levels. I believe men could handle women could handle sharing one man easier than men could handle sharing one woman. But some might think I'm sexist for believe that. It's not meant to offend...it's just my opinion.

 

Actually...

I read recently that the law has changed, and that the government is now trying to word it that any such living arrangement should be illegal. But I doubt it takes completely, in fact, I think the world is fighting for freedom too much, and it is only a matter of time before everyone accepts it.

 

For me, it's totally unacceptable, and women who live like that make me cringe.

Now, if there was any real fairness in the world, women would have multiple husbands...because we could wear you guys out sexually with no trouble at all.

 

What law are you referring to? Multiple people of both sex can live and love together. No law against that.

I had heard that the Mormons got into trouble when: they either apply for child support while living with the father and his other wives - or bring underage girls into the marriage. I also heard that the Mormons legally marry one wife, religiously marry the other wives. The unmarried wives are then legally unmarried mothers when pregnant and are eligible for child support.

Forcing sex on an unwilling person is against the law.

Marriage, and all it's legal implications (health benefits, survivorship, responsible parties, debt issues) is limited to one partner - who can even be a same sex partner in some states.

Can you imagine how the courts would be overloaded with cases of multiple wives and multiple husbands wanting to divorce one or more of the others. That in itself would seem to limit polygamy as not legally practical. John is asking for a divorce from Pam and Gary; Pam wants to divorce Gary also; Gary would like to add Helen as a third wife, so would John, etc.

I don't think there are any laws against having multiple lovers living as a family unit.

So I haven't seen enough women post positively on this topic yet. I guess if I ever convince my wife to let me have another woman, I'm gonna have to keep searching for that second wife...LOL

 

It's primarily a law in the U.S. because 1) it's not a lifestyle approved by traditional Judeo-Christian types 2) polygamy is a real booger to deal with when it comes to inheritance laws. It can be a real burden on the welfare system too.

In the sects that have broken off from the Mormon church and practice polygamy, the husband is the sole breadwinner for multiple wives and LOTS of children. Of course only the marriage to the first wife is legal and the rest are "spiritual unions". But all those wives and children have to eat and have health care and they apply for and get government benefits. However, since they all cohabit and hold themselves out as married and call themselves husband and wives, they are technically common law married and could be prosecuted for polygamy.

 

As a Mormon (A real Latter Day Saint, not an offshoot Mormon that practices polygamy) I have been asked this question many times, specially by people that confuse the LDS faith with Mormon Sects.

Originally polygamy in the church was practiced because of the large amount of widows. We kept being persecuted, chased, killed and kicked out of states. Our men where dieing off. So plural marriage was arranged. It was not a matter of finding a young second, third, fourth wife, it was a joint decision between a couple to bring in a widow and her children into an established household that had the financial means to support both or more families. Brigham Young had around 26 wives but he was a very rich man with the means to provide for them all and their children. In reality, less that 6% of the members practiced polygamy, during the time it was acceptable within The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints.

But actually getting to the question at hand... I think I would have issues being one of many wives. I am not a jealous person by nature but I like to believe that marriage is the ultimate commitment. I am promising myself to him and he is doing the same...bringing in another man or woman kind of...cheapens that commitment. But that is just my opinion.

Having said that though, if one chooses to have a relationship with multiple partners, whether it be one woman with several men or one man with several woman, and it is not a legal or spiritual marriage...go for it. More power to you if you can make it work and it makes you happy as a group.

I guess my issue with it is if you are trying to make a marriage out of it.

 

Other side of the coin

Polygamy is one concept I never understood especially after I got married. The OP said men would love to have more than one woman taking care of them, sexually yes I would agree, but in a marriage HELL NO. Its hard enough trying to maintain a healthy relationship with one wife. I couldn't imagine trying to put so much effort into multiple marriages, and with more complicated issues with jealousy and quality time, and that's not including the curveball of having children. Basically one marriage is hard enough, FUCK trying to maintain multiple marriages.

 

I guess I figured that the two could work for each other. Men want more sex usually...two or three wives could do that. Women want more friendship and girl time...two or three wives could do that. Have you ever known a woman that didn't want some help with the household chores, but her husband had to work to bring home an income...well, two or three wives could help that. What about when he gets home and she is too tired for sex? Well, if all the wives are tending to the chores, they get done faster; or if someone needs a break, the other wives pick up the slack for a day. The man comes home, dinner is on the table and sex is in the bed.

 

but in polygamist relationship the wife chooses the husband not the other way around... and if the other wives have a problem with the new wive the husband cant marry her

Honestly, the idea of sharing a man while fucking turns me on immensly, even the idea of me being used by multiple men. But when it comes down to it, I don't think I'd be able to handle an actual relationship outside of our physical love.
