Look, I'll give Chunky credit for being well-intended and trying to respond to a concern that a number of good people obviously have. I just don't agree that: (1) threads get seriously "derailed" by a certain amount of banter, and (2) that people should try to limit what other people can say, or where they can say it. Like it or not, this is free association, folks. I read what someone says and I reply to it with the first thing it makes me think of, on-topic or not, serious or funny. I'm not going to read what they say, look up at the topic, and go post a response on an entirely different thread.

As for "flirting"...well, excuse me! News flash: this is a PORN SITE!!! If I want to discuss serious weighty matters, there are blogs on every subject known to man. I don't mind them being discussed here...in fact, I like it. But I don't feel compelled to limit what I say to that subject.

So just try a little bit of live and let live, and you'll feel a lot better.

 

I agree with Kimiko.and might I add reading through this thread I see a shitload of hypocrites here.and if Kimiko started flirting with me the last thing Im going to worry about is what thread Im in lol. and you know what else Im not old desperate creepy nor do I hang out in malls lol

ok, well....i'm not sure how this is all going to come out, so bear with me...

i apologize if i have deralied any "real" threads. I try to keep my "banter" to a few threads: flirting, Off Topic, what are you wearing, what did you eat, and the other "silly ones". We all know what happens when I venture into the "serious" ones, so I don't even go there anymore. I guess I didn't realize that anyone minded the "silly" threads being derailed. If I have a witty comment to make, I try ( don't always do it, but i try) to go back to topic either before of after I make my smart ass remark.

I guess I can see both sides...however, I feel angry that people feel the need to "tattle" on the rest of us...if its your thread and we have derailed it, a simple, "hey, i'm really looking for some serious answers here" might work...remind the offenders... I don't know...I have thought several times about leaving...its gotten to "formal" around here. I guess I just thought this was a place to come, kick back, relax, and, oh yea.....

It is sad to see someone get upset enough to leave about starting a thread and having various conversations occur in it, but that happens in real life just as often. In any group of people, there's always somebody who wants to talk, even if they have to change the subject. Every forum I've ever visited has the same problem, and both the chatty ones and the thread originators can find themselves at each other's throat.

As a moderator of a (much, much smaller) forum myself, I've had the problem of thread subjects getting confused, and tried to sort them out by putting various conversations into their own threads. And that upsets everybody as well. 'Hey, what happened to my posts? Why'd you move them?'

There doesn't seem to be any easy solution - except to try and tone down the excess chattiness a bit and take Chunky's request to heart. People do have a short attention span, especially when they have an opportunity to get their 2¢ in, like - 'hey, that reminds me of...' - and off they go to Never-Never Land.

It's basically a problem regarding control. The thread originator wants a certain topic to be discussed, and 150 others instantly jump on with their own thoughts and ideas. Let you in on a secret - - if you expect it to happen, you won't get so upset about it. People are generally not going to do what you want them to. They're going to do what THEY want to do. Maybe that's a cynical outlook, but it does save on heatburn pills.

The short version: It's not worth getting upset about.
