I really don't think there are that many serious issues being discussed on these boards that a little derailing every now and again should cause such upset. However, I may be here for different reasons. And in future, I'm sure this thread will pop into my head as I consider posting.

I'm sorry to see people leave over it ... but like most things, it's a choice. I can overlook the aggravating posts with the best of 'em.

 

I noticed one member who seems very opinionated that if he didn't think of it isn't valid.

 

Well this thread has certainly moved on a bit.
I would like to thank everyone who supported it in principle, especially Nymhpo, whose agreement as a moderator is valuable, and to Caffeine who turned up at the most opportune moment to validate the claim that this issue is encouraging people to leave the forum.
We can now add Music Machine to that list, and I would like to say, sincerely, that he will be missed!
My greatest thanks go to those members who have posted to say that they accept that things have got a bit 'out of hand', and have decided to be more aware and respectful in their posting. That was the intention of this thread, and I’m sure that the other members of this site who see it as a problem would also extend their thanks to you!

On reading the thread and looking around the forum, I can see that there has been some confusion and even over-reaction to what was, essentially, a very simple request. I do wonder if some people actually read and digested it. It was asking members not to swamp threads that ask questions, look for advice, or put up a topic for discussion with pages and pages of personal chat.
In no way does this imply that you shouldn't joke (I’d have to ban myself in that case), comment on other peoples posts, steer the thread this way and that, or offer to give the person on the post above a blow-job!
It’s when three or four people take over a thread and turn it into a personal chat-room.
Surely this is not an unreasonable request?

I’ve seen several people worrying about being ‘off topic’ on threads like ‘What is pissing you off?’ and ‘What are you eating?’ Surely, it’s obvious that in open-ended threads like this, it doesn’t matter if you want to chat and play, I do it too!
I apologise if this thread has dampened people’s enthusiasm, or left “a bad taste” as one member observed. That most certainly wasn’t my intention, and if it has, I’m sure it won’t last long!

Finally, I’d like to thank those people who, through their diligent efforts, succeeded in turning this thread into a working model of the finer points of de-railment. I couldn’t have done it better if I had planned it myself!
First, we had bitching and abuse, then deliberate off-topic posting (thanks for that, I haven’t got round to reading the ‘sagebrush’ piece yet, but I’m sure it’s interesting), then a discussion on who voted for George Bush, closely followed by another episode in our resident ex-lovers on-going tiffs (thankfully, it all ended sweetly), a bit more abuse, followed by a piece of completely random flirting (who was that guy?)

Oh, and I won’t be sending anybody to Siberia just yet, and I do think it’s a bit unfair to set me up as the big-bad-boogie-man who’s trying to spoil everyone’s fun!
Please don’t shoot the messenger.

Miraculously enough, after all that it seems to have got back on track!
Clearly, there are some people who thought it worthy of at least some respect.

Oh yes, I’ve now changed my mind from what I said a few weeks back, I think we do need a chat room!

The very essence of everything I have come to love about this forum is contained in this single thread. This is the best free flowing, free form, free association of people I have ever been associated with. And as Nophest pointed out we're all supposed to be adults here, and the fact that we tend to be high spirited, strongly opinoniated, fun loving, and largely unruly does not change that. I think we all get the points and there are several of them to consider here, but we'll just have to flounder and fuck our way through them, but I love it and you couldn't chase me off here with a shitty mop.

PS Hey Chunky, aren't you glad I was one of the ones that helped talk you into becoming a moderator.
