What is that quote?..History is written by the victors?...the older I get, the more I realise that history is a distortion of events that have past. When I read recent history, of events that have happened in my lifetime, the events don't seem to match what my thoughts or recollections of the same event were.
Does that make me wrong?
Is my version of history no longer valid?

Events happen. They have causes. Nobody's opinions or feelings on the causes or the events are relevant.

Now how does one go about finding out about history? By either experiencing it first hand or by reading/viewing someones account of the event(s).

Unscrew your concept of what history "should" be and install the reality of what history actually "is". The people who write about it or produce visual/audio media about it are human, they actually edit the content for readability and viewability, things get lost in the transition, accounts between witnesses invariably vary, stuff gets forgotten, stuff that didn't happen get remembered.

Case in point, what happened in India when the British wrote about it's history? Why didn't the native people of India correct the distorted history texts?

You are confusing actual events with recorded history, what you are studying is not history, it is someones account of history.
