Just an inquiry to run past our American cousins. I have just spent a week (work unfortunately) in Portland, Origen. As a smoker I have never been in a more hostile environment in my entire life.

It was not good enough that I go outside the building to have a cigarette but I had to be at least 30 feet from the building in question.

How many Americans on here smoke cigarettes?

Here's a little reality check for you: You're the one being rude and inconsiderate by smoking anywhere but your house in the first place.

I'm glad cities like Portland, Oregon have enforced laws that protect the innocent public and not the outnumbered smokers who think they have every right to make everybody else breathe that shit in or smell it or smell them.

This whole "I'm a persecuted smoker" thing is just really hilarious.

It's the same way in Canada and things have gone from one extreme to the other over the years but the health risks of second hand smoke are a serious concern to all and especially a non-smoker that didn't used to have a say in the air that they were breathing .

There is a certain level of hypocrisy in the governments motives though , on one hand they condemn smoking but gladly reap the sin tax dollars .

I quit smoking last week when I read a thread on here about quitting and had never even googled "Nicotine" until last week and that was enough for me .

I would actually consider myself quite a considerate (towards non-smokers) smoker but I just want to understand the 30ft rule.

Why then are not the side-walks (notice I said side-walks and not pavements) situated 30ft from the road-side?

Why are not automobiles similarly sanctioned because they kill more people than cigarettes.

As an aside I found Portland too clean, too sanitized. I for one would have liked to have seen a little graffiti and a little more edge.

In Amsterdam they recently repealed the non-smoking ban in bars and made it at the bar owners discretion. That's what I call progressive.

It was the 30ft rule that intrigued me. Has 30ft been ascertained as the distance at which passive smoking is completely negated by atmospheric dilution. If so why is 30ft from automobile pollution not enforced.

Many bars remain smoke free in Amsterdam the point I make is that it is up to the bar's owner which particular clientele he chooses to attract.

The graffiti is just an example, if you are going to try to put up Portland against Amsterdam in an edgy contest then I will take that bet.

You don't force other people to smell and breathe in the soda, and the soda isn't something that kills more people unnecessarily than absolutely anything else on Earth. Sorry, dipshit, but you have absolutely zero right to smoke. The only reason YOU are allowed to rob other people of THEIR right to clean air by smoking is because tobacco is big business and not only does the government LOVE the taxes it gets but also the thousands to millions tobacco companies pay to elected officials.
