Most of my favorite novels were written 60 years ago or more. Not because I am old fashioned, but because people can't write anymore (but that's another topic). In most of the books I enjoy, everyone lights up. They drink, too. And think nothing of either "vice." Yet in my favorite books, premarital sex is scandalous; adultery is automatic cause for divorce, or even annulment if the marriage has not been consummated (now there is an archaic idea)! Yet, homosexual/lesbian deviancy (as those practices were once regarded) are hardly ever mentioned, and homosexual/lesbian romance (as those practices today are regarded) are unthinkable.

In today's enlightened society, we tar and feather smokers, yet there are virtually no virgins on wedding day; marriage consummation is a non-concept; adultery is most often punished with in-kind retribution rather than divorce; and homosexual sodomy, which reduces the lifespan by more years than cigarettes, is a life choice sanctified by marriage.

Huh, is all I have to say. Or maybe I should say, "That's progress."

I smoke while at work. Other than that, I'm smoke free. Does that make me a horrible person to have a vice?

I choose to smoke at work, down the road from my job so I don't upset anyone while the gluttons inside the building order take out dinners. What a way to establish priorities. People who stuff their faces and use the grill or stove to cook aren't considered "on break" but people smoking a cigarette have had their break and are expected to continue working.

Where I work, the smokers outnumber the nonsmokers. Drastically. A 3 to 1 ratio. Now, if we come to a consensus and establish a smokers doctrine, that for as long as our jobs are completed we shouldn't be deprived of our right to smoke in the designated areas several feet from our company's buildings, that is within our rights.

If someone was naked in public, they'd be charged with public indecency. If a smoker is smoking in public, what would they be charged with?

Don't forget the whole "apply from within" requirement, where an inexperienced relative of an existing employee will be sooner hired for a position they know shit about than someone with years of experience and a stronger work ethic.

 

Sadly people have a right to kill themselves with ciggarettes.It sucks when someone close to you passes from smoking,But it was there choice.

This is pretty much my thoughts. In america you are free to do almost anything UNLESS it infringes on someone elses rights. Having someone else breathe in your smoke against their will in a public place goes against that.

That being said, I went through a stage in my life for about a year when I wasn't physically active at all and I smoked 1 pack a day and chewed 1/2 a can a day. I miss the nicotine badly but being semi healthy is important to me.

I'm a non smoker. I have no problem with others smoking around me. I wouldn't let people smoke in my house purely because of the smell. I don't personally think there should be any laws against smoking indoors. Fair enough ban it in government buildings etc. But for bars and clubs should be down to the owner of the business. If the staff don't wish to work in a smokey environment then they should get a new a job...

I agree with your entire post and respect the fact that you choose not to smoke.

I don't smoke indoors because of the film it creates on furniture, appliances and basically all surfaces in the home. I only smoke while I'm working, outside and away from anyone that might be affected.

If I'm choosing to do something that under those conditions affects myself, am I not free to do so?

People are being shot by guns, stabbed by knives and killed in automobiles but cigarettes are abhorred, an unnecessary evil that shouldn't be allowed to exist.
