So I have recently fallen in love with a show, however I wonder if its like most shows are and is fake rather then being based on facts like they would have you believe. So I am seeking some opinions.

The show in question is My Big Gypsy Wedding. The show was shocking at first because of how out there some of the things they show are but now Im hooked. So, UK people is this show real or just another comple dramatization that TLC is doing.

There's a mixture of people involved - the true Romanies and the Irish Travellers are distinct from each other and from what I've heard they don't mix well.

There has recently been a story about Travellers having 'slaves' - some were arrested, but it's all rather controversial and has been denied.

I myself have romany blood on my father's maternal side of the family. Every year there's a horse fair at a town near to me, and Horse drawn vehicles appear from all over the country. There's usually some controversy, a couple of years ago a horse drowned at the river right in front of onlookers.

 

If they call themselves travellers...why don't they travel??

 

They do Ari, but they have permanent sites that they travel to and fro. Otherwise they would just have to camp at roadsides and I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't like that.

I have not watched the show but I am sure like most Reality Shows there is a lot of made up story lines to add to the drama.

As far as you explaining how the gypsies live and make fields their home for a short period of time before they move on.I believe you.

Honest Cap, they might play up a little for the cameras, but the Traveller life is very different.

Here's some interesting reading about the lifestyle; I heard the author interviewed on the radio. His father expected him to be a bareknuckle fighter like himself and his father and Grandfather. The treatment he had from a very early age was brutal. He realised he was attracted to men; something not tolerated in the community, so trying to leave was a huge decision and very traumatic for him.

The book looks to be a very good story to read.

Reality TV rots brain cells faster than Alzeimer's so stop watching the crap.

 

Quite simply, their right to travel is being taken away from them. The Gypsies, Romany and Travellers are a culture, but we, the 'housed' community, want them corralled and to become like us. In Ireland, they are not even recognised and roadside parking/camping is illegal - which is a shame, because they have a long tradition in Ireland as salesmen, story-tellers and passing along news to otherwise isolated communities.

People would give them a bed and food and they'd pass along news from other places in the country. The 'Tinkers' also sold and mended things from knives to pots and other metal items.

The permanent camps they're forced into are often built by or near rubbish dumps, or they're forced into houses.

Sad to see it all dying out and for them to have such a shit time of it now.
