People who believe in a young earth are demonstrably wrong. People who accept that "animals" arose by natural selection, but that humans were created by god are demonstrably wrong. People who believe that god tinkered with natural selection or guided the process to this end are demonstrably wrong. These creationist beliefs are a rejection of abundant lines of solid evidence that are the foundation for modern biology, chemistry, and physics. It's a rejection of the scientific process on which our modern civilization is built on.

If you want to consider creationism a metaphorical, symbolic expression of a god, you still have no good reason to believe such a thing. None of these creationist arguments are interesting. They're just sad.

Well, people that make a claim of something existing need evidence to back it up. There's no safety in numbers or dwelling on the supposed possibilities, no matter how interesting they might seem.

 

Atheism has nothing to do with knowledge; it has to do with belief. I have no reason to believe in Thor, Ra, or Russell's teapot (google it), but that doesn't mean that I know that they don't exist. "Knowledge" is a red herring. Some things are unknowable, but it would be absurd to live your life believing in something extraordinary without sufficient evidence.

However, I do know that there is no such thing as a married bachelor. That does not require evidence because it is an impossible concept. Many components of the god hypothesis are just as self-contradictory, the most common being the problem of evil.

My thought is that when the Bible was written we knew a lot less about the universe than we do now, and people were susceptible to made-up stories about God, Satan, etc. One could hypothesize a being that runs the entire universe and then inventing an evil counterforce. Or one could invent in one's mind a God that is evil, i.e. a Satan, due to all the misery we see in life. My personal belief is I don't know, but I throw out the entire Bible as semi-historical interspersed with made-up tales of miracles that never happened, having nothing to do with the real God, if one does exist. The God of the Bible is a creation of humans, as far as I can tell.

 

I read Paul Guignebert's Jesus years ago.

Guignebert was head of the Department of the History of Christianity at the Sorbonne. The book was very thoroughly researched and more than half of it was references. Guignebert was clear that his researches told him Jesus had existed, he took to preaching but he was relatively unknown, but all of the supposed miraculous events of the New Testament were made up stories, including of course his being the Son of God.

Time did not exist before the big bang and neither did complex life forms capable of consciousness. Time, space & consciousness all came into being after the big bang.

Time can be slowed down by gravity. The stronger the gravity the slower time ticks.

The singularity was a single point smaller than an atom but extremely (to put it lightly) dense and hot. There is no way time could exist in such a state.

The universe does not need god to exist.

 

If God created the cosmos and everything in it, that means he created Lucifer to be his enemy and have a war with. Either that or he somehow failed to foresee that Lucifer inexplicably had been given the power (by God) to screw up his entire creation. Does that actually make sense to you, Tim? No, not really. I believe in what I believe and I do not need to prove to you or anyone that they do exist.
For someone to proclaim there is no god should require the same necessity if I, as a person of faith, am required to provide proof before I make an assertion Gods do exist.
And, if I am not insisting others believe in what I believe, what difference does it make? Whom am I harming with my faith?

Which is different to saying, "There is no god".
