A lot of people who DID plan for their retirement are also on the ropes these days. They didn't count on their home value being cut in half.

But people do have the right to depend on promises made to them by the Federal Government, via programs they paid into their entire working lives. They have a right to demand that the Federal Government honor those commitments.

The current system is set up to punish the diligent and prudent while it encourages and rewards the wild speculators that happen to guess right. Nobody, on either side of the political divide, is interested in overhauling the underlying framework - despite how obviously dysfunctional it is - because they all get paid by those who benefit from the teetering edifice as it stands.

The ideological call to arms by the Dems and their supporters, or the Repubs and their supporters, is devoid of substance and/or constructive effect. I personally do not believe that any of them have the best interests of anyone but themselves at heart. They should all be utterly embarrassed.
