The price rises that we are seeing now are being driven neither by commodities futures nor by the crude supply.

Our failure to close the Keystone project will have a bigger effect on futures than Iran and OPEC.

But here and now, the biggest single causes are:

1.) Excessive U.S. exports of refined petroleum products to Asia. On the face of it, this looks like profiteering by the oil companies, but in their defense, they have channeled too much of their winter production from heating oil to gasoline, due to the abnormally warm winter in the States.

2.) The EPA's gratuitously punitive extra-legislative regulations, which have forced the closure of the HOVENSA facility on St. Croix. And this is the first of many refinery closures to come.


The glib remarks on this thread, such as "Thank goodness for high oil prices; they will force us to be less wasteful, and will force the car companies to trot out the electric cars they've been holding out on," to be frank, strike me as odd. Something in this country will have to give, when premium unleaded hits $5.50 per gallon, and what we won't see is a magical boost in production and engineering prowess, to produce an electric car that works.

The reason why we can't survive $5.50 a gallon is that the cost per gallon is less meaningful than the cost of goods. One U.K. poster made the point that Great Britain pays the equivalent of $8.02U.S. per gallon. Comparisons of this sort are apples and oranges. Great Britain is a smaller land mass, with a much higher concentration in population. Great Britain is also an island surrounded by busy shipping lanes. The cost to deliver goods and stock them on retail shelves in Great Britain is typically less than the cost for the same goods in the U.S., despite the higher cost for petrol.

Ahh, well. The Obama administration says it's not their fault, and they are doing everything they can.

i seen a thing on tv about this country in south america that changed their cars and fuel after the oil crisis in the 70s, they run most of everything on ethanol... they had huge sugarcane farms just for that and their gas was like 1.50 per gallon

We could have been powering our automobiles on ethanol from hemp since 1905.

But possibly unfortunately for us it looks like we are going to go with natural gas.

Vehicles are getting more MPG & there are alternative vehicles on the market.

We can provide 90% of our petroleum needs with bio mass production of hemp alone. And we could have been doing that for more than 100 years.

You just hit the jack pot. Some of it is because of the struggling economy but between higher mileage cars and alternative fuel cars we have now cut US gasoline and diesel consumption to the point where gasoline, diesel fuel, and jet fuel are now our largest exports.

That's the greed, stupidity, and insanity here. A bunch of brainwashed and paid off Americans are screaming for more drilling and more production simply so we can pay $4.00 per gallon and export our own natural resources to the same place we exported our jobs to.
