That's EXACTLY how Republicans think.

Exhibit A: last year's fight over raising the debt ceiling. Republicans were perfectly happy to allow the U.S. to default, even if it ground the government to a halt and resulted in the lowering of the country's credit rating.

I could cite plenty of examples of Republicans obstructing jobs bills, refusing to act on presidential appointments, and so on. In their zeal to deny Obama any sort of victory, they're perfectly willing to damage the country's economy.

China leads world in green tech

China's green tech industry raked in $63.9 billion last year, making the Asian giant the world's leading green IT producer in terms of revenue, according to a study released Monday.

The study, commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), also revealed that the China ranked second only to Denmark in terms how much the green technology sector contributes to a country's gross domestic product (GDP). This market segment contributed 1.4 percent of China's GDP, compared with Denmark's 3.1 percent where the green tech industry generated revenues totaling 6.5 billion euros $11.7 billion, noted the study.

As Europe’s largest economy doubles its green technology investment to reach $41.2 billion, Germany could soon knock the United States out of second place according to the recent Pew Charitable Trust Report. To make matters worse, while Germany’s investment was substantial, China reined green technology king with a record $54.4 billion in green technology investment while the United States trailed third with $34 billion in green technology investments for 2010. The United States which last held the top spot in 2008 will likely have to settle for third place until better tax breaks for green technology are offered and venture capital spending increases.

Recently Deborah Seligsohn, an energy specialist from the World Resources Institute, told the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power earlier this month: “Chinese economic strategists recognize that China was late to the industrial revolution and even late to the IT revolution, but it believes it can be a leader in a green revolution.”

Republicans Sought Algae Research Grants From Obama, Now They’re Attacking Him For It

By mocking the president, conservatives ignore a history of party leaders and their industry allies endorsing algae research.

Republicans from Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) to Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) have requested Department of Energy grants for algae research. All three lawmakers wrote that algae investments would reduce America’s oil use. For instance, Johanns wrote that an algae biotechnology center “would develop technology to decrease our dependence on imported oil.”

Republican allies in the oil industry have also invested in algae, including No. 1 oil lobbyist ConocoPhillips and ExonMobil, which sunk $600 million in algae biofuel research.

On energy, the administration is doing far more than budgeting for biofuel research. The White House’s FY 2013 budget provides billions for R&D and manufacturing in clean energy technologies, while higher fuel economy standards will reduce U.S. oil consumption by more than 2 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, under Obama, domestic production of oil has reached record levels of quadruple the drilling rigs over the past three years.

Obama Can Give the Economy a New Lease on Life with More Permits

Gas prices are on the rise, but the Obama administration continues its policy of slow-walking drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico. Recently, Greater New Orleans, Inc. (GNO) released its monthly report on the status of oil and gas permits in the Gulf of Mexico—and the numbers help explain why gas prices are up 80% since President Obama’s inauguration.
The Gulf Permit Index shows that since November 2011, an average of only 3 deepwater permits have been issued each month. This is a 57 percent reduction from the historical average of 7 deepwater permits each month over the past three years:

Shallow water permits, although a considerably simpler operation than deepwater, have also decreased notably. Since November 2011, an average of 4.7 shallow water permits have been issued each month, representing a 68 percent decrease from the historical average of 14.7 new shallow water well permits each month:

No less important a measure of the impact of governmental intervention in offshore drilling is the average time it takes to approve each new permit, as well as the number of permits that ultimately receive approval. Data from GNO and the federal government’s offshore drilling regulatory agencies shows that the approval for an offshore drilling plan now takes 31 days longer—an increase of 52 percent from the historical average of 60.6 days—and in 2011 it took 48 days longer. That is almost 80 percent greater than the historical average:

Perhaps most telling of the reality in the Gulf is the number of permits that actually get approval. In the year to date, an average of 23 percent of drilling plans have been approved, a 69 percent reduction from the historical average of 73.4 percent. In 2011, the average number of approved plans was 34, which is a 53 percent decrease from the historical average. Instead of increasing in the time since the Gulf moratorium, exploration in the Gulf is continuing on a negative trend downward:

Restricting today’s supply of oil and gas from the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) will have a significant impact on the United States’ future energy outlook. According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the administration’s offshore drilling regulatory agency, the OCS contains 86 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas. Only 2 percent of offshore areas are currently leased for production, however, and large offshore drilling projects often take years to plan and build the infrastructure to support the operation. Considering that these significant impediments already exist, adding further layers of bureaucracy in the form of slower permitting processes and additional environmental regulations will undoubtedly factor into businesses’ decisions to operate in the Gulf.

Now we have the Chinese middle class exploding and consumption is going through the roof (the upside is they purchase ALOT of GM products!). I hear what your saying about lawmakers and red tape in the U.S. regarding pipelines and "fracturing"-look at both sides, would you want your back yard turned into a sludge pit for a fuel that is extracted and is most likely going to be sold over seas to the highest bidder?

You got it exactly right. We're sitting here looking at $4.00 gallon gasoline so the oil companies can export our gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel to the same countries they exported our jobs to.

Its bullshit. Time for windfall profit taxes and taxes on exported fuel. And as soon as the speculators take off on a price run I hope President Obama opens up the strategic reserves and sells their greedy asses short.

Oil prices drop as government report shows big increase in US supplies

NEW YORK — Oil fell after the government reported a bigger than expected increase in supplies in the U.S.

The Energy Department said inventories of crude oil rose by 4.2 million barrels last week. Analysts were expecting an increase of just 1 million barrels. The report indicated that demand for oil in the U.S. remains weak.

West Texas Intermediate, which is used to price oil produced in the U.S., fell 61 cents to $105.95 per barrel. The price declined both Monday and Tuesday after reaching a nine-month high last week.
