I hadn't heard about that, but they're probably complaining that the depiction of 3000 year old warriors is unfair and racist and will promote hatred among the descendants of Sparta towards present day Iran, formerly known as Persia. In the mean time they're going to print some more political cartoons of Jews eating the flesh of new born babies.

Iranian official lashes out at Hollywood movie "300" for insulting Persian civilization

An Iranian official on Sunday lashed out at the Hollywood movie "300" for insulting the Persian civilization, local Fars News Agency reported.

Javad Shamqadri, an art advisor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accused the new movie of being "part of a comprehensive U.S. psychological war aimed at Iranian culture", said the report.

Shamqadri was quoted as saying "following the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Hollywood and cultural authorities in the U.S. initiated studies to figure out how to attack Iranian culture," adding "certainly, the recent movie is a product of such studies."

The movie's effort wound be fruitless, because "values in Iranian culture and the Islamic Revolution are too strongly seated to be damaged by such plans", said the Iranin official.

Shamqadri, who is also a filmmaker, said that production of more domestic and artistic films which portray Iranian achievements is a proper response to movies like "300".

I liked it more than I thought I would. I definitely want to get my wife some outfits like the Spartan queen was wearing.

Edit: I'm guessing most Americans don't even know Iran is Persia.

 

ok, well, i don't really care about the controversy...i saw it and loved it. i thought it was one of the best movies i have seen in a long time...the graphics were amazing and the characters were great...alot of nudity, but very classy and beautifully done. i fucking loved it!!!!

Please tell me someone saw the original movie entitle "300 Spartans". I haven't seen the newest one yet so I can't judge, but just from the previews it looks like history got skewed, again. As for Iran being upset, does anybody know their history? Take a look at the world during that time. We could easily call each civilization barbaric if we compare it to our time period. However, if you lived back then it was just life. Hopefully, we have learned from our past so we can make the future better for our children. Iran is just trying to cause controversary and the U.S.A is always the favorite scapegoat.

I thought it was great, but then again everything Frank Miller ever made is great.
The graphic novel won a couple of Eisner's (the Oscars of the comics world), for best short, best writer, artist.

If anyone gets the chance, check out his graphic novel The Dark Night Returns.
I don't like superhero comics usually, but this one takes the cake. Batman is about 60 years old, and gets his ass kicked bloody. It's very adult themed, very graphic.
It's also the title of the next Batman movie.

 

derailing a moment

I'm mad because my nephew and i were real excited to go see The Host last week, but it didn't even screen in the entire st louis area! we wrote the newspaper's film reviewer a email and he responded quickly, saying the movie was great, he saw it, but that it had a very limited screening across the country and may be in the area in a few weeks. It is a South Korean monster film. Anyone see it yet?

 

I live in Korea and that movie is their most successful movie ever. I haven't seen it yet, but that's just because I'm too lazy to go to a dvd room by myself and watch it with subtitles. When it was in theaters here there were no subtitles. But, hello home team, I'm also from St. Louis.

Well they are tearing up highway 40 now, what a mess that is going to be Thank god i dont work downtown, but getting to the cardinal's games will be hell. I grew up in kirkwood, it's been in the news recently, mike devlin abducting kids... he worked at imo's in webster(yum!)... now i live across the missouri river in st charles, which seems to extend all the way to columbia/jeff city now. I think Leila is from st louis area too.

 

Well Missouri, but I know. She's buying a house out in Pevely, having one built actually, and I'll be moving in w/her around August.

Just saw it and it kicks ass. It's been awhile since there's been such an absolute guy movie that was actually done well.
