  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

    Best regards,

Here's the attack that comes to mind.... WOW, does time fly... "school" is an understatement... more like secondary school, but whatever:

2002 DNS Root Server Attacks: This DDoS attack was the most significant in history as it threatened the very existence of the Internet. On October 21st, 2002, the 13 Root DNS servers which propagate changes to all the others came under attack. The attack was so significant because it hit the internet’s most vulnerable point. The attack lasted for over an hour and was well-coordinated with all 13 DNS servers targeted at the same time. The amount of data that was thrown at the servers crossed 900 Megabits/second and was composed of various types of protocols including TCP and UDP. Although the servers did not collapse under the load, there were so many attack queries that some legitimate queries from all over the world timed out due to being unreachable....

source: giganetCloud - dot - com

According to the story, the roots did not actually crash. But I recall studying the attack, and many were as good as down. The Internet flooded with packet failures and slowed everything down. More importantly, traffic in many sectors was lost, since localized DNS servers could not update.

If Anonymous can outdo the 2002 attack, they will prove to be bigger and badder than anyone has seriously contemplated. Personally I doubt it, but we'll see.

If you time a Root Server attack properly you can actually get in through their "safe mode backdoor" as they attempt to defend against the attack. The Internet has become far to important to daily life to allow for coordinated attacks on multiple Servers simultaneously and there are far to many failsafes in place.

Backdoor attacks typically require knowledge of the DMZ address (Demilitarized Zone = the maintenance IP of the router, in place in case the main trunk goes down). To know the DMZ IP and masks presupposes inside knowledge. Some of the root servers are at university computer labs, which are full of dickheads (who could be Anonymous) by definition, but not all of them. No way could Anonymous coordinate a backdoor attack on all 13 servers, and besides, such an attack would not have the the necessary bandwidth.

The 2002 attack hit each server with 900MBps (according to the source cited above). That was in the day of 1GBps routers, wired on Cat6.

Today it is typical to run trunks on at least 10GBps, wired on Cat6E (for example, routers switched on Cisco Catalyst backbones). Ever since 2002, the roots have been protected by redundant backbones-- that is, multiple switches pumping router traffic at 10GBps or better.

The DMZ is typically a much slower connection. Sort of like the corporate outside line that is maintained in case all a T3 trunk failure takes the phone system down. No way could Anonymous crash a root through the DMZ. Not today. The DMZ could not carry enough traffic to overload the main switch.

If Anonymous can take down even one of the roots today, it will be both amazing and terrifying.

I agree on all counts here and do not think that they have the juice to get it done ... and if they do, it will lead right back to the source location and the person responsible.

Inside knowledge is not a necessary requirement to backdoor servers, I can get to and have been to places that were said to be impenetrable.

I'm not going to argue or say you're wrong. I'm just curious....

I suppose finding the address could be done from outside... but you are able to authenticate? Maybe. Lots of servers are not locked down very well. Not that it would help in a DDOS attack... the bandwidth issue again... but I am just curious. Don't name any names, but I have never heard of a way to backdoor servers consistently, meaning, to be able to break in at will. Maybe in the 1990's, but today? I am just thinking about what it would take to hack a router, firewall, and server that are competently locked down. I mean, modern routers are typically configured not even to respond to ping requests. One could ip-trace the address of a root server easily enough, but that only leads to the dns service. How would one find the back door... and even if one could find it, how would one authenticate? My specializations are software design and SQL database design. I (obviously) only know enough about network security to be dangerous. Hmm. A fascinating weekend project.

Knock yourself out and argue away ... just because you can't do it doesn't mean it can't be done. I have helped many different groups secure their systems against people like me, lol. :p:excited:

I would love to answer your questions and can already see someone kicking in my front door after I do. I will say that I wear a "black hat" at times.

We can discuss it in our PM's and if you give me a few details I can give you a couple tools that might help.

PS ... I like to mix business with pleasure so all we need are a laptop and a bed, lol. :excited:;):rose:
