I'm too lazy to Google, but is it Switzerland that it's populace is heavily armed, and military personel can take their assault weapons back to civilian life after the end of their service? It's one of those N. European countries.

I don't know about Switzerland, either, but I know that ex-army personnel are allowed to keep their weapons in Israel.

Mind you, I wouldn't say their *war* crime-rate is non-existent

 

Because of the nature of their armed forces their army is a peoples militia and after a mandatory period of service they return home with an assault rifle ready to stand to if their borders come under invasion. This ensures that almost every home has at least one AR in it but gun crime does exist there just that if the crime is committed with the AR then there is extra time tagged onto the sentence.
I am not sure if their airforce take home jet fighters, but I am sure their navy doesn't take home ships.

The biggest predictor of crime is the racial composition of an area. Whites and Orientals have low crime rates wherever they live, so a country where nearly everyone is white or Oriental has a crime rate regardless of gun control laws, and the number of guns.

An interesting exception is Russia. Since the fall of Communism there the crime rate has gone way up. Nevertheless, we should not expect too much from social change. Before the end of apartheid South Africa had strict gun control laws and a high murder rate. It still has both.

People ought to riot over Trayvon Martin, but not in favor of Trayvon Martin. As more and more evidence emerges (and more and more NBC executives are removed) Zimmerman's claim of self-defense appears less and less assailable.

What should be rioted over is the media's sensational and thoughtless behavior which endangered a great many people and inflamed social conflict in an already conflicted society. Tapes were edited, conclusions were jumped to, evidence was hidden, all in favor, it seems, of creating a toxic, riot filled atmosphere. If there is no responsibility in the media for such carelessness, if all that is required in such instances is a redaction on page D-54, how can we expect any improvement?

I understand the need for a free media, however, that is quite different from a sensationalist and irresponsible media. News outlets should be required to report corrections to stories in the same way the original story was reported -- you covered it on the front page, you admit your mistakes on the front page. Until they are publicly shamed for their ignorance of the facts, our media will continue to act recklessly. How long before their combination of agenda and ignorance stirs up something slightly more dangerous than a race riot?
