I wish there was more that I could do for the person, but other than telling him/her where to go and that people do care about what s/he does (which some people have done already), there's sadly not much one can do to help the person through an online forum.

You shouldn't ever goad a person on, though - you never, ever have a clue whether they're serious or not. You might not be able to help much, but you can certainly make it that much worse for the person. If you don't like the person, you could always just, y'know, ignore the thread - better to leave it be than be a potential accessory to suicide, if the person is serious.

By the way, you don't have to be a drug and alcohol counselor to be able to read. If you're not sure how addiction works, or if you haven't been to an NA meeting already, you might want to look into that. Not being condescending, (which I freely admit I can be a master of at times) they really can help. A lot of addicts think they can do it on their own, and some can, but it's really rare. Many people trying recovery on their own will relapse. I'm only suggesting this because you don't seem to be aware that addiction is an on going illness, it doesn't stop the moment you put the drugs down. If you had been to any meetings this would be one of the first things they tell you.

I was thinking more along the lines of allowing those who are hungry to eat what is already in abundance instead of growing their own. Then after they've received adequate nourishment they can learn how to cultivate the lands and plant their own.

now i always dislike the people who claim it is just a cry for help and that nobody actually goes through with their threats, because so many have done just the opposite.
