Years ago I watched William Buckley debate Ian Smith on his Firing Line program. Ian Smith was at the time the Prime Minister of Rhodesia, which was a minority white ruled republic. Whites could vote. The majority of the population, which was black, could not. Smith was open in expressing his belief that blacks lacked the intelligence to be trusted with the franchise.

Buckley told him, "Democracy is not an intelligence test. It is a means of saying, 'No'."

Decisions will always be made by well informed elites. When these decisions result in bad outcomes it is important that all the people, of every race, be able to vote for new elites and different decisions.

Everyone must obey the laws. As many people as possible should have some say in which laws exist.

 

Basically, Ron Artest is a very ignorant person. He can play basketball but he is a head case. If he's not neglecting his dogs or abusing his wife, he's doing something unacceptable on the court.

You don't know what "socialism" means. I think the word(s) you're looking for are: authoritarian, dictatorial, oppressive, oligarchical, tyrranical.

 

There is no contradiction between democracy and socialism. A democracy is a government in which there are regular contested elections. Socialism is an economy in which most of the productive property is owned by the government. If most of the voters desire that, we have democratic socialism.

There is at least a mild contradiction between capitalism and socialism. Under capitalism rich people have disproportional political power because of campaign financing, and because they own the mass media.

Being from Australia, I actually think its an alright system. It gets everyone involved in the political process and that way they know what the whole populace want. Besides it's easy enough to make an invalid vote at the ballots!

You are allowed to not vote; you can spoil the paper, hand it in blank, or write on it "none of the candidates are worthy of the position."

But you do have to physically go and make an effort to not vote. Nobody gets be lazy and not bother. I'd actually support such a law; I wouldn't require everyone to vote but I do think everyone should hand in a voting slip, with an option to put on it "none of the above" or to refuse to vote for anyone.

 

No one that's been on wellfare for over a year or more should be alowed to vote.

Voter turn out in Australia is on average in the mid 90 percentile with less than 6% invalid ballot papers, so I guess they get the government that they want.

That's a good way for people who are anti-welfare to force through its abolition, since most of the people who would suffer from abolishing it won't be allowed to vote.

But what democratic reason could there be for imposing such a ban?

 

At one time people used to say there are no blacks or wgites, we're all same under our skin. That was back when I was a kid. I still believe tht so I don't use black outside my fantasy stories. But then again, they don't teach Apartheid in middle school anymore from what I hear. I don't know....
