On the other hand, I'd rather have the rules be too loose and put up with trolls, than it be too strict and always be fearful of being banned or censored. As it is, whenever I post a lolcat I have to doublecheck to make sure there is no kid in the picture :???:

At least with trolls, the community can take care of it by starving them. If the rules are too strict, after a while the forum itself starves for good content. So pick your poison :neutral:

I could not agree with you more and have a great sense of loss to see this forum (like most other forums) simply become a reflection of the moderators and their clique.

Seems some folks like their freedom (as long as it's their freedom), yet are happy to applaud arbitrary control of somebody else's communication that tends to annoy them, and top it off by bemoaning the loss of some sort of "rights" that never existed here. Come on people, painting yourself into a hypocritical corner can't be that much fun, can it?

Well I think it that was going to happen it would have already happened wouldn't it? Because we've always had racists and never censored or discriminated against them before.

And as has been noted before it is the wide open uncensored environment that actually attracted most people to begin with.

But now the question I have is when do I become a "red neck white trash racist idiot" and get thrown out because some moderator doesn't like what I post?

 

I think my only issue is that it really is in violation of the rules. I don't see the point of having rules if you're not going to enforce them.

If this guy's posts don't fall under the category of stupid and hateful I really don't know what does. And if you're not going to enforce that rule because you feel that having the freedom to say what ever you want is more important, then maybe you should go ahead and just remove that rule. Just sayin'

But you'll notice that's not the rule the god mod said she was acting under. She just invented her own definition of spam.

 

That's one of the reasons that rule doesn't work well; seeing a post as "stupid and hateful" versus "harsh and insulting" is quite subjective. Which means that being offensive, on its surface, is not necessarily breaking the rules, but the intent behind it matters, and intent is notoriously difficult to tease out.

 

I think for the most part his posts are OBVIOUSLY hateful and stupid, but any one could argue they're not, just for the sake of arguing. I can't believe any one would think other wise, but that's another story. But my point is, if you're going to have a rule that you can't/won't enforce, maybe that rule should be removed.

 

At the end of the day we should be thankful that we have a forum where we can all voice an opinion. If that means putting up with bigots and racists, then so be it. At least we have the chance to confront them on their views, and put them under scrutiny. A free open forum is a beautiful thing.

Lets not forget this is a private forum, the person who pays the bills sets the rules. The first amendment does not apply here. The first amendment only gives you the right to start your own form of forum where you can freely voice your opinion there. If the owner wanted to, they could take away our ability to express ourselves freely here.

Liberty is what makes our country great. Freedom of speech, the market place of ideas and the freedom to scrutinize or criticize are the foundations of a democracy. It is one of the few things left where America leads the world.

 

Funny, I was in Texas 2 years ago outside on a public highway, I stopped and lit a cigarette, a policeman approached me and told me to put out my smoke as I was in a "No smoking area"

I was outside, at least 40 yards away from the nearest building and there were no signs.
