anyone see this cover....check it out.
I'm curious what folks think.
I didn't post the actual image because I think it could be considered inappropriate for this site, even though it is gracing the cover of one of the most widely distributed magazines in the world.

Is breast feeding a nearly four year old son inappropriate? Would the image be more appropriate if the woman looked more 'matronly' instead of being so attractive?

 

I want to say its her right to do so, but in the back of my head I think there has to come a time when it ends.

 

I said this to a friend who posted on facebook, I believe when I child reaches the age where they can unhook the mothers bra with one hand they should be breastfeeding that child, not to mention that the kid in the photo looks like he is five not three. She claims its alright but I believe she is doing it for her benefit, if she wants to keep the breast she should just pump.

Its a natural thing sure but its more natural when its an actual baby, what is she going to do when he goes to school, and gets hungry ?

Surely there is nothing more natural than breast feeding your child, it must surely be down to the mother to decide for how long they continue to nurse their child. It seems strange to me that anyone would be offended, when we can see pictures in our media of dead dictators, bombed out villages, tanks on fire ( yeah there is probably a bunch of soldiers in there ). Floods, earthquakes, poverty, starvation, victims of extreme assault.

Here in the UK we were treated to the picture of a 90 year old person who was beaten sensless in a robbery but hey lets all get upset by someone doing what is nothing but absoloutely natural and actually quite beautiful

 

If the belief is that breast milk is still beneficial at such an age then pumped and served in a cup seems fine to me but, getting it straight from the faucet seems disturbing. Would it be psychologically sound for the child or raise him with a stunted or unnatural affection for his mother?

The cover is posed to incite controversy and to make it seem more extreme. They chose a 3 year old who is very big for his age and the mom was dressed in tight clothes. They said it was posed because the children are so big and you need a chair to breastfeed them. They could of picked a different choice for the cover description and a more natural picture. I personally wouldn't be nursing a 4 year old, but I don't judge those who do. Saying it is molestation, child abuse, and all those other absurd things going around is just extreme and ridiculous. Her family, her rules. The kid looks like he's doing just fine.
I'm interested to read the article. It seems it was written to hurt more than help the views on attachment parenting. I don't find most AP techniques or Dr. Sears to be extreme in the least.

It's not entirely uncommon, particularly in third world countries. Historically, many societies breastfed for the first four years which provided a wide range of benefits.

She's not hurting anyone, the kid might be a bit 'different', but who really cares?

You'd be hard pressed to say the child looks neglected or anything, and so what if people are uncomfortable? She's different, yes, but it's her choice right? Why is there so much enthusiasm for impinging on others rights in the world?

 

I think you may have missed the point. It is a magazine cover, and such an act with a child (who looks older than 4) is inappropriate. "A bit different"? That child will be more than just "a bit different" when he grows up. What else might such a mother get up to? I may seem old fashioned, but there are limits. That magazine has crossed the line, as has the mother, in my opinion.

 

It's all about an avant-garde theory called "Attachment Parenting". Personally, I don't buy it. And the cover is sensationalistic, unworthy of Time.

I totally agree that a mother has the right to do this if they believe it is for the benefit of their child and I would not criticise if it is done within the confines of the home. However, the truth of current society is that this practice is not deemed acceptable and thus I would not wish to see a mother doing this in public because of the ridicule both she and more importantly her child would receive.

I totally disagree that this cover picture should have been printed. It is clearly designed to cause controversy and it has a deeply unsettling sexual aspect to it. Why choose a glamorous women who is fully made up with a child who is large for his age? It's just giving all the sick pedos out there a cheap thrill. By all means show the reality but not in such a titillating way just to cause controversy. By printing this picture they have already biased the debate against attachment parenting.

 

It's funny how a magazine had gone over the line. I can't truly remember the last time that I read Time outside of some office waiting for something. Magazines hardly are making any money. This is what it takes to get people to talk and perhaps a few to actually buy the magazine. Funny how a pictures that wad designed to do what it was meant to do buy an antiqued source was able to do just that.

At this point it really has little to do with the breast milk but more about the attachment she wants with her kid, which goes along with the links Kimiko posted. I understand wanting to bond with your kid, but this just strikes me as controlling and narcissistic.

I've just struck a deal with the kid that if he will trade places with me, he can have my steak and I can have his mama's tit. Mama likes that deal too.

 

When i was young enough to be baby sat I remember the woman nursing her child after she got hurt by her brother...she would have been 5, I think. It's been around a lot longer then people think, and there isn't anything wrong with it. What makes it seem wrong is peoples assumption that it MUST be sexual. Breasts are multipurpose, just like our vagina.
