A few times a year I call my old friend that lives in another State. He smokes marijuana and drinks beer from the time he gets up in the morning until he goes to sleep at night.

His blood pressure is usually in the range of about 170/110 (normal should be 120/80). He takes medicine for it every morning.

Anyway, I told him that drinking beer negates the benefits of taking the medicine. Of course he is in denial and said, "Drinking beer and smoking pot makes your blood pressure go down."

I call him again last week and now he has added the drug "OxyContin" to his daily routine, and says that he can't function without it.

He told me this story:

"I was walking over to my garden to water it, then I suddenly collapsed. When I woke up, I found myself laying on the ground and was blind. I laid there a few minutes then my vision came back."

I searched the internet and found the events as described by him are a precursor to a stroke.

I told him what I read and he replied, "That is nonsense. Well, I have to go now. Some friends of mine just came over and I have to make a business transaction with them. See you later."

What are your thoughts?

I'm sorry to say this, but it's a rough road your friend has found himself on. It's a road I've been on myself. I wasn't on Oxy though, I was addicted to morphine. However, in the end it's the same thing. Both are opiates, it's the same addiction and withdrawal as heroin.

The weed and the alchohol are nothing to be worried about by themselves, but mixing the alchohol with that oxy is what the real danger is. That's why he's finding himself passed out and blind. He's already addicted, heart and soul.

Sadly, there is very little you can do without being there with him to push him through the Hell known as Withdrawal. The best advice I can give you is to talk to your friend. Make sure they know that you are their friend. That whatever they've done that they're ashamed of and want help with, but fear it, they can talk to you.

Next, be wary of lies. The fact that he even fessed up and admitted his addiction is beyond what I could ever even have concieved. It's a very shameful and hard topic to talk about. Probably as hard to talk about as being molested. Addiction just puts that big mental block in there.

Talk to your friend, get him to, at least, stop mixing the Oxies with the Alchohol. You could talk to him about seeing somone and getting help. Like a clinic, but I would have talked about it and NEVER EVER went. No matter what. Your friend might be different than I was, but I've talked to some addicts and former addicts before. Our experiences are fairly universal. The causes are all different, but Addiction did the same thing to all of us.

I've been through this before, and if you need somone to talk to about it, I can tell you exactly how it happened for me, and maybe help you. But that's not going to be easy.
