Many members of the media reacted with puzzlement and criticism to Mitt Romney's continuing criticism of the White House response to the deadly attacks in Libya and Egypt.
The Romney campaign drew fire on Wednesday morning for issuing a blistering statement condemning the American embassy in Egypt for speaking against an incendiary anti-Muslim film, even though the embassy made the statement before any attacks had taken place. NBC's Chuck Todd, for instance, called the statement "irresponsible" and a "bad mistake."

National Journal's Ron Fournier called Romney's actions "ham-handed" and "inaccurate."
Conservative pundit Erick Ericson, while disagreeing with Todd's response, also warned Romney to be "cautious."
Despite that criticism, Romney continued this line of attack in an appearance on Wednesday morning, saying that the White House had made a "severe miscalculation."

Other reporters were similarly baffled. "The Romney campaign's politicization of the embassy attacks is even worse than I expected," Foreign Policy writer Blake Hounshell tweeted.
Speaking on Fox News, Peggy Noonan was also blunt. "I don't feel that Mr. Romney has been doing himself any favors in the past few hours," she said. “Sometimes when really bad things happen, when hot things happen, cool words or no words is the way to go.”
"If you think the eye-rolling at Romney is just coming from the MSM, call up some Republican foreign policy hands," BuzzFeed's Ben Smith added.

In Meetings With Anti-Pornography Group, Romney Campaign Promised To Prosecute Porn

WASHINGON DC — Mitt Romney’s campaign told a leading anti-pornography group that the Republican nominee will pursue and prosecute pornography if elected president.

Three months ago, well after Romney became the presumptive Republican nominee, his campaign held multiple meetings with Morality in Media, a group which describes itself as the “leading national organization opposing pornography and indecency,” according to executive director Dawn Hawkins. She told ThinkProgress that they had met with Alex Wong, Romney’s political director and legal policy adviser, to discuss the issue of pornography and what he would do about it if elected president.

During that meeting, Wong allegedly told Morality in Media that the campaign “would pursue prosecutions” of pornography and that the issue is “important to them.” The Romney campaign met with the organization “a number of times” in the past three months, Hawkins said.

The isn’t the first time that pornography became an issue in the campaign. Romney signed Morality in Media’s pledge during the Republican primaries, promising “strict enforcement for our nation’s obscenity laws,” calling the matter “imperative.” In addition, the national GOP platform calls for “vigorously” enforcing anti-pornography laws. The effort is a throwback to the Bush administration, when Attorney General John Ashcroft spent “millions to file charges across the country” in an attempt to target “just about everything on the Internet and almost everything in the video stores and everything in the adult bookstores.”

Though the Republican nominee may not discuss the issue on the stump, anti-pornography activists are excited about the prospect of a Romney presidency.

Romney Campaign Approvingly Cites Statement Saying That Its Tax Plan Doesn’t Add Up

The Romney campaign has been pushing back against a recent report by Innovation Ohio and the Center for American Progress showing that “millionaires in [Ohio] would receive an additional $87,000 in tax breaks under the tax plans of Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan while middle-class families would pay $1,900 more in health care taxes and $1,066 more in taxes on their mortgages.” That report used data from a Tax Policy Center study showing that, if Romney were to keep his promise to reduce tax rates while maintaining government revenue, he would have to raise taxes on middle class families by more than $2,000.

In an attempt to refute the IO/CAP report, the Romney campaign approvingly pointed to a Tax Policy Center blog post saying that the math in Romney’s tax plan can’t possibly add up:

As part of his pushback, [Romney campaign spokesman Christopher] Maloney cited a blog by Tax Policy Center director Donald Marron saying, “I don’t interpret this (study by his group) as evidence that Governor Romney wants to increase taxes on the middle class in order to cut taxes for the rich, as an Obama campaign ad claimed. Instead, I view it as showing that his plan can’t accomplish all his stated objectives.”

Unless Romney is admitting that he will be breaking one of his tax plan’s key tenets if he gets into office, there is no way to make it add up without a middle class tax increase.

The Romney campaign has assiduously avoided laying out which tax deductions and loopholes it would close in order to cover the cost of its huge proposed reduction in tax rates. But the Tax Policy Center showed that even if Romney eliminated all tax preferences for the wealthy, he couldn’t pay for his plan without eliminating deductions for the middle class in such a way that middle class taxes would ultimately increase. And either the Romney campaign agrees, or it doesn’t understand the various analyses that have been released, if it is approvingly citing a statement saying that the plan’s math is suspect.

Now there are fears that the violence could spread to the U.S.

So far, the narrative of the 2012 presidential campaign has been consistent: Americans are frustrated with President Barack Obama's handling of the economy and are eager for a change, but they like him personally. That's the dynamic that has kept the president and his Republican rival Mitt Romney neck and neck throughout the summer.

But slowly, through a series of deft advertising and pinch hitting from popular former President Bill Clinton, Obama appears to be turning a corner. A new Fox News poll shows Obama leading by 5 points, 48 percent to 43 percent, but even more concerning for the Republican's campaign lies beneath the surface.

On the question of which candidate voters feel is better at creating jobs and improving the economy, the two men are deadlocked at 46 percent, according to the survey. A similar poll in June gave Romney a 7-point edge. Other recent polls have also shown Obama and Romney tied on the economic question.

And on tax policy, Obama has managed to turn a weakness into a strength, according to the Fox poll. In June, Romney was more trusted than Obama, 44 percent to 40 percent. Now, Obama leads— 48 percent to 45 percent—on that same question.

When it comes to nearly every other issue, Obama has maintained the lead he has held so far in the race. Voters prefer him over Romney when it comes to foreign policy, education, Medicare, healthcare, protecting the country against terrorism, and immigration.

The one area where Romney dominates is when it comes to cutting spending: There voters trust him more than Obama by 13 points.

Obama also is cleaning up on questions of personality when matched up with Romney. Voters in the Fox poll say he's more intelligent, honest, a stronger leader, equipped with the right experience, and a harder worker than the former Massachusetts governor.

In Michigan, thought to be a potential swing state thanks to Romney's roots there, appears to be out of reach for the Republican as well. A new EPIC-MRA poll shows Obama extending his lead to 10 points there.

There remains a silver lining for Romney in the Fox poll; he holds a whopping 25-point lead over Obama when voters were asked who better understands the principles of capitalism. The data lend credence to the advice getting doled out by conservative leaders nervous about the contest: Focus on the economy.

Ronald Kessler reporting from Washington, D.C. — In the last presidential election, the press hoodwinked Americans into thinking Barack Obama was the messiah.

The press never reported that Obama had no significant achievements. As a community organizer, his only success was removing some of the asbestos from one Chicago apartment project.

In a revealing passage in his memoir, Obama wrote, “When classmates in college asked me just what it was that a community organizer did, I couldn’t answer them directly.”

Instead, he said, “I’d pronounce on the need for change. Change in the White House, where Reagan and his minions were carrying on their dirty deeds. Change in the Congress, compliant and corrupt. Change in the mood of the country, manic and self-absorbed. Change won’t come from the top, I would say. Change will come from a mobilized grass roots.”

Thus, Obama admitted that he accomplished little but was able to cover that up with diversionary talk about change.

Nor did the press report until it was too late that Obama had spent 20 years listening to the anti-white, anti-America, anti-Israel hate speech of his friend and mentor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. Despite the press’ cover-up, if the financial crisis had not hit a few weeks before the election, John McCain likely would have won.

In this election, the press is still boosting President Obama, but it can’t hide the economic statistics that demonstrate Obama’s failure as president. Polls show the public understands that failure. Two-thirds of Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

While Obama is seen as more likable than Romney and the two have been running neck and neck in the polls, many hesitate to say they don’t like or won’t vote for a black man who is bright and engaging.

At the same time, Americans who have had to tighten their belts since the financial crisis understand that the country must deal with its fiscal problems, as the Romney ticket advocates.

If you doubt that, look at the results of the 2010 midterm election: With cutting government spending and attacking the fiscal crisis as major issues, the GOP won back six Senate seats and 63 seats and the majority in the House of Representatives. That led Obama to say he had suffered a “shellacking.”

Republicans also won the majority of the country’s governorships. More recently, Republican Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin withstood a recall vote protesting his cutbacks in government spending.

Polls cannot measure how many will actually show up to vote for one candidate or the other. Now that Paul Ryan has been added to the Romney ticket, conservatives are fired up. The crowds of students supporting Obama on college campuses are now nowhere to be seen. Blacks who have borne the brunt of Obama’s dismal employment record are far less enthusiastic about him than they once were. Independents who favored Obama now support Romney.

For months before he was elected, Ronald Reagan was behind Jimmy Carter by double digits in the polls. In the end, Reagan won by 10 percentage points.

Romney and the Republican National Committee have more money than Obama. They are starting to flood the country with ads that portray Obama’s failure and replay his comment that businessmen are not responsible for their own success.

The ads portray Romney as the decent man he is: With the exception of some in the press, almost everyone at the GOP convention in Tampa teared up as they heard from members of his church recounting how Romney took the time to visit and comfort their dying kids.

As noted in my story "Dave Keene: Romney Will Win by 5 to 7 Points," the former chairman of the American Conservative Union predicted as far back as June 2011 that Romney would be the GOP nominee. Just after Obama was elected president, Keene said that he “did not win for the reasons he thinks he did, and he can be counted on to overreach, helping to return Republicans to power.”

Keene says Romney will win decisively, and since the GOP convention, polls show that momentum is moving in Romney’s direction. Given the headwinds Obama faces and the quality Romney brings to the table, I believe we will start to see a snowball effect in favor of the former Massachusetts governor.

Most of all, I have faith in the American people and their ability this time to see Obama for what he reveals himself in his own memoirs to be: a pitchman. My prediction is that Romney will win by 10 to 12 percentage points.

That's exactly right. And I'm not saying that President Obama WILL win the election but I can say for at least right now he is increasing his lead in nearly every category, demographic, and issue.

We've got to keep fighting to keep the money from winning this time but at least so far the fight is going great for us.

Every time Mitt Romney tries to change the subject and find something he can criticize president Obama it just turns around and blows up in his face.

Such is his latest ploy of trying (and lying) about President Obama's dealing with China. And never mind that the one thing Romney is famous for is shipping US jobs to China. Because this latest viral Romney video is worth several thousand words.

As President Obama campaigns on his administration’s ninth trade complaint against China, and while Mitt Romney hits back by lying about it, the President’s reelection campaign is attacking Romney’s China policy from another angle. They’re promoting a Boston Globe report on Romney’s investments that includes a viral hidden camera video showing the Republican candidate discussing, with donors, the deplorable conditions at a Chinese factory that Bain Capital was considering investing in.

The Boston Globe‘s Matt Viser reported on the many intersections of Mitt Romney’s criticisms on China and his business dealings, including a firm called Global Tech, a deal that was made long before Mitt Romney’s highly dubious “retroactive retirement” from Bain. While Romney can try to sell the idea that after 1999, he had no responsibility for the company he was sole owner of, he’ll have a harder time distancing himself from this deal:

Romney appeared to reference the Global Tech investment in a video that appeared on YouTube about three weeks ago. In the 2-minute video, which was shot surreptitiously and purports to be taken at a high-dollar Romney fund-raiser, Romney describes some of the spartan working conditions at a company Bain officials were planning to buy.

“When I was back in my private sector days, we went to China to buy a factory there,” he says. “It employed about 20,000 people. And they were almost all young women between the ages of about 18 and 22 or 23. They were saving for potentially becoming married, and they work at these huge factories.”

Romney said the women were packed into dormitories, 12 per room in bunk beds, and only earned a “pittance.”

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney faced a new campaign storm on Monday after the release of a secretly filmed video in which he told rich donors that nearly half of Americans were dependent “victims” who didn’t pay taxes.

President Barack Obama’s campaign quickly seized on the controversy, which erupted after a string of tough days for the Republican’s campaign, questioning how Romney could serve as president having written off half his nation.

In the excerpts of video posted by the left-leaning Mother Jones magazine, Romney is seen to say in a closed-door, private fundraiser, that 47 percent of Americans will vote for the president “no matter what.”

“There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”
“These are people who pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

The provenance of the video could not be independently confirmed. Mother Jones streamed the images on its website and said identities of people in them were blurred, and the venue of the meeting was obscured to protect its source.

The explosive comments are the latest in a long line of comments by Romney that have complicated his attempts to shed an image framed by Obama’s campaign that he is a multi-millionaire businessman out of touch with the middle class.

Obama’s campaign manager Jim Messina pounced on the excerpts, which come as the president enjoys a small but clear lead in the national race and in battleground states 50 days before the general election.

“It’s shocking that a candidate for President of the United States would go behind closed doors and declare to a group of wealthy donors that half the American people view themselves as ‘victims,’ entitled to handouts, and are unwilling to take ‘personal responsibility’ for their lives,” he said.

“It’s hard to serve as president for all Americans when you’ve disdainfully written off half the nation.”

There was no immediate comment from the Romney campaign. Romney’s head is the only aspect of the camera shot that can be clearly discerned in the video.

It is pointless trying to debate with you and Stumbler. Not only do you not read the posts, but you didn't even read beyond the first paragraph of the Times article that you quoted.

I never said Rasmussen is accurate, or that it doesn't skew toward (R). I was using it comparatively, because Stumbler was trumpeting polls that skew (D), after several of us had already written about the same poll (NBC/WSJ/Marist) and had conceded that Obama holds a lead.

I know I sometimes go nuts on my threads for comedic/dramatic effect, but you guys are cranks 24/7, and your posts appear to be completely on the level. You take yourselves so seriously. It is weird, to be honest.

Then you wonder why we question your sanity.

You can mark my prediction now: A secret recording from a closed-door Mitt Romney fundraiser, released today by David Corn at Mother Jones, has killed Mitt Romney's campaign for president.

On the tape, Romney explains that his electoral strategy involves writing off nearly half the country as unmoveable Obama voters. As Romney explains, 47 percent of Americans "believe that they are victims." He laments: "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

So what's the upshot? "My job is not to worry about those people," he says. He also notes, describing President Obama's base, "These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

This is an utter disaster for Romney.

Romney already has trouble relating to the public and convincing people he cares about them. Now, he's been caught on video saying that nearly half the country consists of hopeless losers.

Romney has been vigorously denying President Obama's claims that his tax plan would raise taxes on the middle class. Now, he's been caught on video suggesting that low- and middle-income Americans are undertaxed.

(That one is especially problematic given the speculation about what's on Mitt's unreleased pre-2010 tax returns.)

Corn tells us there are more embarrassing moments on segments of the video he hasn't released yet. Romney jokes that he'd be more likely to win the election if he were Hispanic. He makes some awkward comments about whether he was born with a "silver spoon" in his mouth.

But those are survivable. The really disastrous thing is the clip about "victims," and the combination of contempt and pity that Romney shows for anyone who isn't going to vote for him.

Romney is the most opaque presidential nominee since Nixon, and people have been reduced to guessing what his true feelings are. This video provides an answer: He feels that you're a loser. It's not an answer that wins elections.
