This is a list of alleged "lies" by presidential candidate Barack Obama that circulated during the 2008 presidential primary season.

There were several different versions, the first having only about 25 criticisms of Obama and instead of calling him a "liar" it ended each claim with the phrase "Not quite." Then it was 46 questions and a version circulated that added four more to make it 50 lies.

It was a very difficult and tedious process to research this. Whoever put it together did not document where Obama made these statements and many of them could not be found...

It is also true, however, that he herded goats. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, Obama describes that his father herded goats for his own father, who was a farmer. As a youth, Obama's father was sent to a missionary school to be educated. When he returned, according to family members, he could find little work except goat herding in his village of Nyangoma Kogela in Western Kenya.

Seriously, it will all come out later. None of the primary documentation has been destroyed. It is needed for his library. It will all go public when his presidency is past-tense and it no longer matters.

Who knows why he is really suppressing his past? It's probably benign. Something like, Axelrod knew he would have been unelectable if it were generally known that not only Obama, but also his Chicago Christian pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, are apostates who once practiced the Muslim faith. Or maybe it is even more benign than that. Maybe he pulled a Granny Warren when he was younger, and checked a few boxes that he should not have checked, in order to get into college.

In eitherr case, the suppression would simply have been to ensure electability.

We'll find out eventually.

Meanwhile, let's keep dunning Romney for his tax returns, so we can nitpick $50 here and a $100 there, on the finances of a guy who makes $11 million or so per year and gives hundreds of thousands to diverse charities. Yeah. Get those tax returns, so David Axelrod can divert voters from the shitty economy all the way to November.

You can't expect Barry to just shut the fuck up about Romney's taxes and campaign on his RECORD, do you?

What matters is that TERRY ANDERSON did not document these statements.

In 1993, GS Technologies, a company Bain Capital had invested in, purchased a struggling Kansas City steel plant from Armco. Prior to this investment, Armco announced plans to close the Kansas City plant if a buyer could not be found.
This investment – and $170 million in upgrades – kept the Kansas City plant competitive in a tough international market and saved the steel workers’ jobs for eight years.

In addition, the plant finally went under 2 years after Romney left Bain Capital to head up the Salt Lake City Olympics. Even if you believe the Obama campaign’s fact-checked and disproven claim that Romney left Bain in 2002, it would be obscene to blame Romney and Bain when the investment was designed to save GST Steel.
Now, the kicker that makes this the most offensive ad I have seen in a long time (although not in history, as a 2010 ad compared one GOP candidate to the Taliban). Soptic’s wife died in 2006, five years after he lost his job and health insurance with GST’s closing. When she went in for pneumonia, her cancer was so far evolved that it was untreatable, making health care irrelevent. The argument is basically that “some guy, who once worked for a company managed by the company Romney managed, lost his wife to cancer, so Mitt Romney killed her.” This is ridiculous. President Obama should immediately disown this ad, but I doubt that’s going to happen.

More importantly, Aces, notice that DistantLover is not really rebutting the assertions. All he is doing is illustrating that the person who compiled "the list" is using a a common style of rhetorical premise, for purposes of entertainment.

We know it is entertainment. DL does not have to point that out.

What DL cannot do, and what no one can do, is rebut the deeper assertions. For instance, whether or not Obama ever whitewashed Odinga's Kenyan atrocities is secondary to the incontrovertible fact that the atrocities were committed.

Thus, none of DL's "rebuttals" are really rebuttals. They are just rationalizations that he uses to convince himself that he is not really deluded.

That's such a whopper that the Pulitzer Prize-winning PolitiFact website, which grades the truthfulness of politicians' statements, gave the comment a "Pants-on-Fire" rating on "Truth-O-Meter."

"The ad's claim is not accurate, and it inflames old resentments about able-bodied adults sitting around collecting public assistance. Pants on Fire!" PolitiFact wrote.

The ad makes it seem like Joe Soptic's wife, Ilyona "Ranae" Soptic, lost her battle with cancer shortly after he lost his job at GST Steel in Missouri, where he had worked for almost 30 years.
"When Mitt Romney closed the plant I lost my healthcare, and my family lost their healthcare," Soptic says in the ad put out by Priorities USA Action, the main pro-Obama super PAC. The ad is expected to air in the coming days in five battleground states.
"A short time after that, my wife became ill. I don’t know how long she was sick and I think maybe she didn’t say anything because she knew we couldn’t afford the insurance."
It's a very heart-wrenching story, but it’s not accurate. Here is the actual timeline:
Romney stopped his day-to-day oversight at Bain Capital in 1999 when he left to run the Salt Lake City Olympics, though he officially remained CEO until 2002. Bain Capital shut down GST Steel in 2001, costing Soptic his job.
According to Mr. Soptic, his wife received her primary insurance through her employer – a local thrift store called Savers – and retained it even after his layoff. Soptic's policy through GST Steel was her secondary coverage.
In 2002, Mitt Romney formally left Bain. Sometime in 2002 or 2003, Mr. Soptic says his wife injured her rotator cuff and was forced to leave her job. As a result she lost her health insurance coverage and Mr. Soptic's new job as a janitor did not provide coverage for his spouse.
It was a few years later, in 2006, that Ilyona Soptic went to the hospital with symptoms of pneumonia. She was diagnosed with stage four cancer and passed away just days later.
Joe Soptic, an Obama supporter who appeared in another political ad released by the Obama campaign back in May, told CNN he blames Romney for the loss of his job and his insurance.
"That is the way I feel," Soptic told me over the phone. "Mitt Romney is a very rich man. I mean, it is obvious if you watch him on television he is completely out of touch with the average family, you know middle income people. I don’t think he has any concept as to how when you close a big company how [it] affects families, the community – you know, it affects everyone."
Priorities USA said Tuesday the ad, titled "Understands," was part of their current $20 million television and online buy, and that the 60-second spot would run in the battleground states of Iowa, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio.
The Romney campaign disputes the ad’s accuracy.
"President Obama's allies continue to use discredited and dishonest attacks in a contemptible effort to conceal the administration's deplorable economic record," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said in a statement. "After 42 months of unemployment above 8 percent, it is clear that the President and his campaign do not have a rationale for reelection."
The Obama campaign and the White House are keeping their distance from the debate. During the White House briefing Tuesday, Press Secretary Jay Carney said he hadn't yet seen the ad.
"I'm simply saying that I have not seen this. So how could I possibly assess it?" Carney said.
"But you can. Will you assess it later?" I asked him.
"If you ask me tomorrow, sure," Carney answered.
When I followed up with him after the briefing he told me though he may look at the ad his assessment “will be I have no assessment."
It's become a common occurrence this election cycle: a Super PAC does the dirty work so the campaign, the candidate and, in this case, the White House don't have to.
