Arkansas has become the first state in the Deep South to qualify a medical marijuana initiative for the ballot.


Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin on Wednesday certified the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act has enough signatures to be on the November 6 General Election ballot. The proposal needed a minimum of 62,507 signatures from registered voters to qualify.


"Compassionate Care is an important issue for thousands of Arkansans and their families," said Melissa Fults, treasurer for Arkansans for Compassionate Care. "This is something the people of Arkansas want to discuss. We've always been a leader in the South and now we're the first one to put medical marijuana on the ballot and have a real discussion about it."

There are thousands of dispensaries scattered across the states that have decriminalized marijuana. Doesn't mean marijuana is legalized.

A number of states have legalized medically prescribed marijuana growing, sales, and consumption. "Dispensaries" are marijuana prescription filling centers. You can't walk in off the street and wave cash in their faces and get weed any more than you can walk into your local pharmacy and buy other "controlled substances" just because you want them. Scripts may be fairly easy to get, but there's still statutory control of it.

That's a lot different from "legalizing" weed. I think the kid on the street who tries to sell an eighth to a cop still gets busted.

Weed is NOT federally illegal medicinally. I have a friend here in HI who legally has three HUGE plants growing in his house....aahhh, the sweet aroma tempts me!
