Been piecing my story in my head now for a couple of hours here at work, and before I knew it, it was break time, and had everyone I work with looking at me to finish so they can take their ear plugs out.

I just hope I can write it out as well as it sounds in my head. I changed it up a bit from my original thought of a story, and like the way this one is flowing more.

Oh and BlackRonin thanks for the added paintings I was going to do some research the painter and still might, but seeing more of his works helps a great deal in adding a few of them into my story.

 

Stalled at 8000 words. Now I have to explain demonic possession without sounding like either a university professor or a head case!

Edit: Not sounding like a head case probably isn't possible here, so I'll just blunder on into the dark.

 

WantSomeFun: Demonic Possesion? Listen to the tape "The Posession of Emily Rose" for inspiration; assuming your not grasping your chair in horor by the end of it.

Actually here is a way you may consider doing it: figure demons are spirits, thus primarily energy, why could they not imprint themselves upon a humans nerual pathway in the brain; either adding to or even overwriting the existing personality with their own.

I've never written anything...dark, haunting and scary before.
So I don't know what the hell is going to flow from my brain to my fingertips.

 

"somewhat nuts"? Oh, no, no, no, you underestimate. I'm going for full-blown psychosis here -- the kind that puts you in a room with button-and-tuck wallpaper wearing a VERY long-sleeved jacket, fighting the effects of the Thorazine.

 

I've got a demon in my story, but no possession. Like in the last CAW, I'm taking the picture very literally. It's not symbolic, it's not metaphorical. The painting is literally a scene in my story. Okay, I'm taking a few liberties. The girl's head isn't off the end of the bed, the incubus doesn't actually sit on her chest, and try as I might, I just can't find a way to fit that damn horse in.

That's funny because after reading the history of the "Nightmare" painting, how to make use of the horse was the first thing I figured out.

Now as far as the rest of my story......................:wall::wall::wall:

I'm just ragging WantSomeFun a bit. Actually if I do a comedy with zombies it more likely will be the zombies fighting cyborg chickens.

 

Actually for me Dizzy, fitting in all three elements was easy in my own confused style. I have to admit with full credit to those who gave me the ideas and suggestions for the 'chase scene' or whatever you want to call it, of heros v alien in a cavern system, has come along better than on my own could have been.

That is one thing with this challenge I have gained a new appreciation for; many views to a story type (dark, mystery, etc) are a kind I never have written, but have come to see the challenge in it as many others have told in part of their stories.

Also, looking back at some of those in CAW 12, I had to enter this one with my own usual chaotic twist on things.:-H

 

DC why not just have the horse as a form of allegory or something similiar?

 

I wasn't referring to you, of course. Although... now that I think of it, the horse in the painting doesn't have a name either. Hmmm... Coincidence?

So... the alien is chasing them through the caverns... on horseback?

Actually, I came up with a solution. It's a cheap trick, but as long as I word it in such a way that it seems like just another unimportant detail, I think I can get away with it.

 

Okay, this I've gotta see.

I believe one interpretation is that the horse is simply the demon's steed that he rides as he goes about his wicked business at night. There's even another, similar Fuseli painting, "An Incubus Leaving Two Sleeping Women", that seems to depict the creature leaving via horseback (albeit what seems to be a tiny flying horse...look, don't ask me, I didn't paint it).

On the other hand, I've sometimes imagined it as a hallucination in response to the trauma of...well, whatever has just happened.

How about having your character, hearing horsey noises outside, creeping up to the curtain of her room and, as she pulls back the curtain.... NEEEEIIIGGH! the horse's head pokes through! :excited:

Like some of my fellow authors, my story has a demon/daemon/incubus in it. And a horse. It's all a bit Schrodinger though - there's a creature sitting on a woman's chest. Or maybe there isn't. 50/50 chance.

 

Christ - compared to the rest of you, mine seems like Pollyanna meets the boogie man.
