I love the house, I would like to live in something that looks like that! I'm a fan of old creepy looking houses. I've always wanted to re-create the hosue from "Psycho" somewhere and live in that .

I think it ruins the whole thing if you remove the "Evil" looking windows.

 

An idea for the next Halloween CAW; why not one of a 'haunted' house or manor. I already have an idea for a short story of a ghost seeking revenge. If I write it, just don't eat the dinner at the feast.

Considering the fact that Tristane had a derivation in it, I would assume that some level of derivation would be OK.

I also do not see in the instructions that derivative works are a problem. Since the issue at the end of the day is the SOP's, and with the instructions regarding other deviations from the 'norm', it might be better to PM with a question identifying the derivation and questioning directly.

There's nothing in the rules that says you can't tie a story in with other things you've written, so I would guess you're fine.

That said, in my own personal opinion a CAW story needs to be self-contained.

By that, I mean that everything the reader needs for full enjoyment of the story should be in the story itself. References to other stories should not advertise themselves, or the readers will feel like they're missing something.

To put it another way, if the vignette relies upon the reader being familiar with the other story, then those who aren't only get 90% enjoyment out of it.

However, if the references are made in such a way that the reader is never left wondering what they're missing, then most readers will get 100% enjoyment out of the story, while those who are familiar with the other one can get 110% enjoyment out of it as a bonus for catching those references.

I do this a lot with my own stories. Many of my stories overlap, but I'm very careful to make sure that they're self-contained. My CAW 10 entry is a perfect example of this. I re-use some of the minor characters from Allison and the Primdales, but I could just as easily have changed their names and made it entirely independent. At most, an astute reader would notice a resemblance between the two sets of characters.

When I was a child growing up my father thought it would be fun to take me to "Uncle Bob's" house... Unfortunately for me I was terrified by going to his house.... he had a coffin on one side of the room that was a book case and a child sized coffin as a coffee table... there was a woman in one of the back room's nailed to a chair and was very convincingly mummified. There was a wearwolf skeleton in the attic... and a great number of other creepy things laying around the house...

I only learned later that "Uncle Bob" was on of the FX artist for Poltergeist and a few dozen other horror flicks.... I don't like scary very much....

That and the painting's really don't do anything for me... sorry I need more sluice in the juice

By vignettes, do you mean excerpts? Generally I think the idea is to write something that's been composed specifically for this. An existing work, or part of it, isn't really what we usually have in mind. But if the composition is original it's fine if it's just related to something else you've already written/are writing. Might be harder to sell to the readers, but that's your deal.

 

In this case "derivation" would be more applicable than "vignette." Pursuant to to DC's remarks above, the piece that I have in mind would require heavy modification, with original backstory, to extricate it from the larger work so that it stands on its own.

In fact it might require so much work (i.e., more work than simply writing a new story from scratch) that I could decide not to take it on.

 

Yeah, that sounds like it would be likely be all right.
