This is true, slaves where closer to indentured servants if they belonged to a jewish family that closely followed the guidelines set down in the bible. And slaves where set free during the Jubilee festival.

However, life as a slave was still brutal. You could be beaten without recompense, you could only eat crops that fell from to the ground (grapes are the specific example. Grapes still on the vine were for the master and his family, but if it fell on the ground, a slave could eat it.)

Indentured servitude still exists in many countries to this day.
