Okay, this has nothing o do with sex, relationships or any of the usual topics. This is going to be kind of long so hang in there. I wanted to ask your opinion on bomb threats. Today,my daughters school recieved a bomb threat. She's in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!!!!!!! What kind of sick, twisted ,evil people threaten an elementary school? THANK GOD<THANK GOD<THANK GOD,it was a hoax. there has been a few threats to our high school lately and that is bad enough but to threaten little children that's beyond evil. I wasn't even aware of the threat.the school didn't even let the parents know. my daughter was home for a hour and a half when she said as casually as you please"oh yeah, we had a bomb threat and there were police and really cute dogs." I am so angry that the school didn't let anyone know. that's their job right? i can understand right at the beginning, because it could cause a panic, but they should've sent a letter home, saying,This is what happened,This is what was done and This is our strategy plan if anything like this bomb threat happens to be real. we parents have a right to know this. with everthing going on,the anniversery of colombine, virginia tech, the recent threats to the high school,we need to know our kids are safe. i'm writting this on the forum, because,i've read alot of threads and everyone seems to be pretty opinionated. My daghter had nothing to saty about the the threat other than it was pransters. she wasn't even bothered by it. how young is to young to teach your children about the dangers of the real world? you don;t want to scare them so bad that they never want to leave the house, but you want you kids to understand that ther are bad people out there. my kids know about STRANGER DANGER.I taught then that, but i thought i had more time to tell thenm about other dangers, i guess i was wrong. I have not been this scared for my kids since my youngest didn't come home from school on her first day of kindergarten.(it happens that she got on the wrong bus at school and the bus driver took her back to school, the office didn't know what had happened to her) I know that this thread is kind of all over the place. sorry about that. i'm still pissed off. please send some feed back and let know your opinions to my ?'s. thank you

hell we have one like every month, it's sort of like a field trip cus we get to evacuate the school and go somewhere else

You know i asked for opinions. but you are making way to light of the situation.I realize that most threats aremade by students. But it is not a FUCKING field trip when it is your child being threatened!!! Hoax or Not. I can garuntee you that it was not some 10 yr old making the threat, I was someone older, problably the ones thet did the high school. That is just sick. And my name is NOT Jack!!!!!

I'm not making light of the situation. I'm just trying to get you to understand that pretty much every single bomb threat is fake and is made by a student or other type of person who wouldn't ever do anything.

And how about this, what about when it's ME threatened? I have first hand experience with bomb threats seeing as they happen quite often and every single time I think "what if this one is for real? what if I'll die?" but everybody makes light of it because it usually is nothing but a prank and they're probably trying to not let on that they're asking themselves the same questions.

I know all about the dangers out there. I've seen some of them firsthand. And I have heard a loud bang and thought "oh shit, so and so is shooting up the school" and I have had dreams where somebody shoots up mym school and I get killed, and I have been afraid for my life before but it usually is nothing and incidents like school shootings and bombings are the exception and not the rule.

You wanted an opinion so there's mine

:(Thank You! I am sorry for going off. But it makes me so mad. I hate knowing that anything bad is touching my chilrdren. I don't know wher you live, but I can say that i have never experienced anything like this. The onlything that has ever happened when i was in school was pepper spray in the venilation system. Times are changing and not for the best. Just imagine what you kids will have to deal with if thing don't change. It's scary.

You don't have to apologize, I understand, it's your kid, you feel helpless because there's nothing you can do. And I am not trying to scare you at all but I guarantee your kid will experience that feeling and most likely some sort of experiences by the time she's a senior in high school. The thing that matters is how she deals with it and what she does to make her school a better place.

And I live in a pretty nice neighborhood, a lot nicer than my old one, this stuff just happens everywhere. I don't even wanna think about what my kids will have to deal with, hopefully things will get better by the time they're around somehow.

Well, when a bomb threat happened at my high school in my senior year, we all got to go home, and since my sister and I were driving up at the time of it happening, we just got to drive home. That part of it was nice. But it still freaked me out, because I knew the kids who called it in, and I considered them friends. They were stupid enough to tell us with complete confidence that they did it. It's just a bad situation. Another one happened earlier this year, and yet another KID I know called it in. He is going to jail the minute he turns 18 for 10 years. Not a joke. It definitely gets you attention, but not for the best.

The foregoing and the federally mandating busing of the kids who create disturbances into schools where there would normally not be any such are the big reasons for parents to do home schooling.

The schools have become dangerous places. The troublemakers aren't kicked out, or put in juvenile detention. And you really can blame the Federal School Busing program.

I think it's totally unrealistic to expect that the school is going to notify the parents every time this happens. What are you going to about it, pull your child out and put him or her in another school where the same thing can happen on any given day? It's been happening for decades.

Furthermore, I have no idea why you would make a distinction between an elementary school, a high school and a college.

    Well here's my two cents.
A juvenile prankster calls in a bomb threat with a big enough mouth to piss in from across the room.
Their gonna get caught because they can't keep their mouths shut, too bad.
Comfort for parents more informed information about what the schools policy on emergency evac or lockdown and what they are going to do about it.
    How can this be prevented?
Stricter punishment for those who commit such crimes.
Should the schools be more accountable?you bet they should be.
Should the schools inform the parents of what is happening at the time?you bet they should.
But as a consequence would this cause an outrage by parents?most likely.
But doesn't it anyway only on a smaller scale?
From a teachers point of view if you have 400 students by the time you rang everybody wouldn't the problem be over?
But as a courtesy call it would be nice.

I experienced several bomb threats when I was in school. None of us took it very seriously, but I felt sorry for the teachers, who had to go through all of the lockers looking for bombs. They fixed that problem -- they got rid of the lockers!

And nobody EVER contacted the parents.

yeah, my mother works at a school in upstate ny. the day after the virginia tech thing, the school (a high school) received a bomb threat. they evacuated, and discovered it was students that had done it. she said three of the other high schools had to close that same day due to "death threats over myspace" and kids threatening to go into school and kill everyone. apparently after the video of the asian guy that attacked virginia tech was aired, some kids thought they should do the same thing. i don't understand why they showed that video on tv. what were they expecting?? for people to be like "oh, oh i see now. yeah, he did it because the other students were harrassing him every day. now i understand." FUCK NO! sorry, but there's no excuse for that. and that tape SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PUBLIC.

To Kimiko,I was not trying to distinguish between elementary school children and older kids. It doesn't matter wether the people are in college or elementary. The whole thing stinks. My reasoning is that my children go to elementary school and i feel that because these kids are so little, that for them to be threatened lke that ,it just makes me a little angrier because they are so young. nobody should ever feel threatened. No matter what age they are.And it's a damn shame that bomb threats are so common that noone really worries about it,or doesn't seem to. I have never went to a school where we were threatened.Maybe thta makes me a little naive in this situation. I still think that the school should of let the parents know what has happened. this kind of thing has never happened to this school before so that is not an excuse. we parents have a RIGHT to know what goes on in our schools.

I didn't say people shouldn't worry about it, and I'm a parent myself and know where you're coming from. Clearly the school should do everything possible to prevent these threats. But I don't think notifying each and every parent is the best use of the school administrators' time under those circumstances, and will do little or nothing in the way of prevention. I'd rather they cooperate with the police in trying to identify the culprit.

They can always send a note home with the kids, but that's an unreliable method of communication with parents. If it was a student who phoned in the threat, I doubt he's going to share the note with his or her parents.

I agree that there's never ever any excuse to shoot up a school but that's a whole other thread entirely. Schools are dangerous because the kids there make them that way. Everybody tries to be a badass gangsta nowadays and people take it too far and usually it's a few groups of people terrorizing an entire school that gives a school a bad name and usually they're just punks who buy weapons to feel like tough guys.

I went to Secondary School at the tail end of the IRA bombing campaigns in the UK, we lived in a town with a fairly large military prescence (notably the Royal Navy). Anyway, our school had a specific section of the fire evacuation notice that dealt with bomb alerts! Thank goodness I never experienced a bomb scare; my mum would've probably gone mad with worry!

Same thing happend to me, right after that whole virgina tech shooting, some kids from another high school (our school is kinda in a rivalry with them, due to sports) thought it would be funny to send a bomb threat to our school. Everyone was FREAKING out, but when they finally found out who sent it. Those kids got in so much trouble not only from the state, but also from some of the kids from our school went over and beat their asses.

    same thing happened

When my son was in the 5th grade and my daughter in kindergarten their elementary school received a bomb threat. Of course it was a hoax from one of the kids that used to go there that was now in Jr. High. But I have to give the school credit due to the fact that they evacuated the school and got the kids to a safe place while they checked everything out. They then got the kids back into their class rooms and that afternoon sent home notes with all the students to tell the parents about what happened and how they delt with it. The following day they received another threat, some of the parents were mad but because it happened before the start of school they cancelled school for the day. They then set up an emergency meeting for all to attend so that together we could all come up with a plan on how to deal with it. They installed better security and made it so that you could not go any futher into the school past the office without signing and if you did not have valid business in the school then you were asked to leave. They also kept all the doors except the front door locked at all times - you could go out but not get in. After that we had no more threats, it doesn't mean that something bad could not happen but it made the parents feel better that they were at least paying attention to the situation and doing what they could.

It is the schools responsibility to inform the parents of anything like this and if it were me I would contact the principal and complain. If that got me no where I would go to the super intendent and then to the school board and I would surely be at the next board meeting to voice an opinion with as many parents as I could get to go with me.
