A shotgun (especially a pump action) is mainly used for intimidation (as tenguy mentioned earlier). People are more likely to be afraid of a shotgun (or any other large firearm) as opposed to a .38 special. I'd use a shotgun for intimidation, a stiletto for killing.

That being said, I would fear for most any minority living around DL if he owned a firearm.

I do not rate the AK47 as it is inaccurate to begin with and then it seems most users like the pray and spray method therefore all shots after # three are heading skywards and are wasted, while the L1 on single shot will be popping all targets that show theirselves, the M16 on 3 shot bursts is pretty accurate but lacks the killer punch of the L1's 7.62 Nato round.

But it is all subjective and not many people will agree with me.

 

You nailed two of my favorites. Im not a fan of the M16 rifles. There have been far too many rifles in the same caliber that have been so much better that I just cannot bring myself to like the M16.

As for shotguns for home defense, they are as good a choice as any other choice. I have a set of Peltor stereo earmuffs with sound enhancement($60 or $70 at Cabela's) right next to my 12 gauge 870 for the simple reason that I want to keep my hearing and yet still be able to hear ambient noises. They work pretty well too but there are better ones on the market from what I have been told.

Best round 7.62

Debates all over. Was in Harrisburg at BassPro, most of the cases empty. Only thing emptier were their ammo shelves.

The 7.62 is a great caliber and used widely by the military. Should you feel the risk is high enough you are going to need a holdback of fresh ammo or a way to reload. 7.62 should be the easiest to come by. Shotgun in house...great. I like my Kahr PM9 for cc., but have other setups. My deer rifle is a poor choice M1 30-06. I don't need an auto load, but would be nice. Most ak's have Chinese parts, ar's made in good old USA. Ar over ak any day for me. I own neither.

Think of this...a little Ruger 10-22 is a solid gun. Bricks of hollow point LR still available and cheap. Sure it isn't what you'd want, but I used to pop the nose of those stinking snapping turtles at 80 yds in our bass ponds with a 10-22. Cheap, accuratemasmall get ou, and beautifully reliable. Face it a broken ak or GLOCK with no ammo is nothing more than a brick. I shoot often and keep a small supply of all caliburs on hand, locked away

If you haven't already YouTube up Katrina Gun Grab. It'll send ice water through your veins. Don't go overboard but don't be ignorant either. In times of crises we may have to resort to our own resources for survival for a time. Reports have shown civilized society begins breaking down 3 days after a disaster. Perhaps wise to own guns, maybe some stored food or prearranged geographic retreats. However what will be your trade? Dollars? Bank is closed too. Credit cardsmmay not work...what them? For me Some of the old 1 oz silver coins is a wise thing to hold. They are locked in safe keeping offsite for security. I'm not talking about graded sets...old peace or Morgan's are basically worth market silver unless you dabble in rarities. Your Visa card would only be useful for picking your teeth

Most importantly, if you do this, keep your mouth SHUT. You may even store it offsite like I do. Every person you bring into the know is a breach of security. Worst case scenario it's your lifeline. Loose lips sink ships and destroy supplies of gold/silver/food/guns/and ammo. Again be prepared and think seriously about what you'd do. Some people go all out and renovate bomb shelters. While this is wacked to me I do get it.

Spread your risk. Hope for the best and plan for the short term worst. Have enough furl on Han to power your generator for a week. I don't want it to be you I'm shooting at
